edited November 2011 in Poker Chat

We are live on 865 from 8pm and on Sky Sports 4 from 10 tonight with the 15K Sky Sports Bounter Hunter and the 5K Sky Roller.  GL to all, if there are any hands you'd like analysed along the way throw us the hand ID and we'll get them on...

Our guest in the studio is the magnificent Julian 'Yoyo' Thew: so called for a stack that goes up and a stack that goes down... More on the up of late as I'm sure you know so any questions or comments for the man they call Yoyo let us know...

Tonight we're keen to hear your route into poker...

Last week we learnt Luke Schwartz started on the slots, moved on to playing pool before progressing to poker so what led you to the beautiful game?

Plus what's the one piece of advice you'd give a newbie?  Let's share the wealth of knowledge and lessons learnt... Schwartz told us his game improved immeasurably on the advice to loosen his range of playable hands and to play more aggressively, so whats the one piece of advice you'd give a newbie to really improve their game?

And for a bit of fun tonight how's about a quick movie quote quiz!  Give us a quote from your favourite famous film and see if you can stump our movie maestro with it *he promises he won't cheat, he won't need to*

And the good news!? ALL posts and emails will go into a draw for free entry into saturdays super bounty hunter!!!

GL on the tables see you live from 8

Sarah xx

    Hi guys,

    What film is this :

    A -     It's Judgment Day, you know?

    B: No. What's that then?
A: Well, it's, you know, the final day on Earth, when mankind will be judged for the crimes they've committed and that.
B: Oh. And see who gets into heaven and who gets into hell and all that.
A: Yeah. And what's the other place?
    B: Purgatory.
    A: Purgatory... what's that?
B: Purgatory's kind of like the in-betweeny one. You weren't really sh**, but you weren't all that great either. Like Tottenham.
    [pause
B: Do you believe in all that stuff, Ken?
    A: About Tottenham?

The answer is In Bruges, quality film, couldnt choose some of the better qoutes cause of the language, unfortunetly.

    Hey guys.

My route into poker was playing on free poker sites at 13.

My route into online poker was seeing a tv advert for skypoker in january i decided to join and now i'm hooked.

My advice to old/new players. everyday when i log on the first thing i do is goto hand history and look at all the big pots i have lost whether its a sng cash or mtt. i then look at these hands to see if i could of played it differently. this also helps me improve.

    Movie quote:

"when exactly did you lose your mind"

"it was about 3 weeks ago, i woke up married to a pineapple, an ugly pineapple"

The answer is ICE AGE 3

my route into poker was a couple of years ago when I and a couple of mates realised that the Vegas holiday we had agreed on a few years further back was fast approaching and we'd better have some knowledge of what to do!!

Advice to a newbie - don't deposit anything you cannot afford to lose, because lose you will at least to start with.

Film quote - an easy one really - "It's a 106 miles to Chicago. We got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark and we're wearing sunglasses.  Hit it."  The Blues Brothers.

    Hi guys,

Great so see Julian on the bill tonight, he's a really great guest with alot of insight.

    My Route Into Poker

Like alot of people I used to watch Late Night Poker on Channel 4, I was only about 13 at the time and shortly after starting watching, me and some friends (who also watched it) got a bit of a regular game set up in my garage, all just putting £1 in, winner takes all SnGs. Used to play about 5-6 hours a night with them from the age of about 13-18, then took the online route.

    Advice for a Newbie

Play within your bankroll, whatever that may be, some people have alot more disposable cash than others, but allocate a certain amount for your poker funds (bearing in mind you have to be willing to lose it all) and stick to good bankroll management. It's one of the most important things regardless of how good you are on the table.

    Movie Quote

"I had to kill Bob Morton because he made a mistake. Now it's time to erase that mistake"

    Answer: Robocop

    Film quote;

"In any real city, you walk, you brush past people, and people bump into you. In L.A, nobody touches you. We’re always behind this metal and glass. I think we miss that touch so much, that we crash into each other just so we can feel something."

tbh it could be worse.  he could be on the show when Orford is presenting and have 4 hours alone with him...even when Thew runs bad he runs good. :)

proper question for Thew tho....what would it take for him to stop playing poker....is there a figure in mind?  say binking the WSOP ME...would it then be bye bye poker and trying something else or do you always think you'll have the drive/buzz to play the normal tournies @ DTD etc

    My advice to a Newbie:
    1. BRM
    2. Enjoy the moment! It's a game not life or death
    3. Play your cards not the pot
    4. engage the brain before moving your mouse
    5. Remember no-one's invincible
    6. Think once, then twice, then think again
    7. Remember! a pretty hand at the flop like a fresh cut flower can wilt as easily on a card table as it does in a graveyard
    8. Use the Forum to share experiences
    9. Never stop learning

    Film quote for Julian

Christopher Robin: This is my treasure box. Its where I keep my harmonica, [plays lively tune] my yoyo and one of my favorites -- the friendship bracelet that Darby made me. She drew my picture on it. See?

My advice to a newbie is to always trust your gut.

I became interested in poker after the boom aka the Moneymaker affect.
Advise for new players purchase the Harrington on Hold em series books on cash or mtt's.  Become part of a training video site.  Or even find  a free one like sky poker tv, prob the best training site of all.   Don't just be told not to open limp think why it's bad for yourselves as the moment you begin thinking about the game and putting people on ranges you have already improved and wont just be a bingo player or button clicker like me:)

Have a good show ps if you're going to sue anyone James, Phil Ivey has a good lawyer if in doubt ask his wife :)
  • edited November 2011
    have a good show all.

As there is no James tonight, does this mean that Julian is getting double pay tonight???£££???

I started playing poker at college, 5 card draw penny antis, this was in 1989 and payed for my pints at the weekend :)  My advice to newbies is to remember you will give out as many bad beats as you take so DON'T take them personally.

My question for Julian is how much pleasure did you get winning your very own tournie on Tuesday?
