just wanted to ask paul jackson why he wasnt in the late nite poker this year its my fav show on channel 4 been watching it for years i see neil channing on it and luke schwartz alot of good playuers would of been great to see paul jackson on there just wondering how come he didnt enter this year thanks guys :)

    Big show this Thursday night on Channel 865.

    After almost a fortnight away from Sky Poker TV, Tikay and I are both back and joined at the hip again! Or, in Tikay's case, the artificial hip.



    We're covering the high-class uber-stakes Sky Roller and also dropping in on the Sky Sports Bounty Hunter.

    And the whole broadcast begins at 8, simulcasts from 10 on Sky Sports 4 and is live throughout the night till midnight.

    As if that wasn't enough, due to popular demand we've rebooked one of your favourite guests ever.

    It's the man who was at the forefront of the internet revolution in the UK with his legendary online presence as ActionJack. He played the universally recognised greatest hand of poker ever against the universally recognised greatest player of poker ever, Phil Ivey.

    And he's undoubtedly one of the most erudite, articulate and entertaining explainers of the game ever to grace poker.

    He's also a fellow Midlander and West Brom fan, so I love him even more.

    Moving from tournaments to cash (and vice versa)

    Give us all your advice and queries on this subject and we'll have a good chinwag in the studio about it. Assuming most players cut their teeth on the freeplay tables, then move on to small buy-in sngs, then perhaps small mtts and build up the buy-in from there, when is a good time to make the final transition to the cash tables?

    What tactics/mindset do you have to leave behind when you step away from MTTs and on to the cash tables? How easy is the transition? What tips or questions do you have about making the move as painless as possible?

    What level should you start at and when do you you're ready to move up to the next level?

    Tell us your experiences and share your pearls of wisdom + ask us those burning questions you've always wanted answering so I can put them to one of the biggest experts in the field of poker...and Tikay. ;-)

    It'll be quite hard to do better than last week in a 400+ runner field! But you're right, I DO mean business!

    As for the show, REALLY looking forward to this one. The last one I did with Paul and Tikay was great fun and very informative.

    Id like to ask Paul. As a player i pride myself on tournaments, my big results give me a feeling that i dont think theres much to replace it. However I have one serious issue when it comes to them. I have loads of gears for the latter stages which i can change in a heartbeat with opponents. What i lack however is a strong Early stage gear, I find i used to have an attitude of if im out in level one, no time wasted onto the next one. However Live inparticular this isnt always possible.

    What adivce would Paul be able to offer?

    Id like to ask Paul. As a player i pride myself on tournaments, my big results give me a feeling that i dont think theres much to replace it.     No worries, Don. So basically what you're saying is: you feel comfortable in the latter stages of tournaments because you know when to change gears and how to play your opponents in various spots. However, in the early levels of MTTs when you're chipstack is pretty much the same as everyone else and there's a long way to go, you're not entirely sure how to proceed. Should you be aggressive?     Hi Rich,

    This looks like it's shaping up to be a fantastic show... I've only seen Paul on the show once but he was brilliant.

    Unfortunately I won't be able to see it live because I have other commitments but I've already got it set up to record on the Sky+

    I was writing in really because I had a question that I thought you might be able to help me with. Basically, as you know, I've been organising the HU competition on the forum, we're currently on Round 2 which has 32 players/16 matches) and so Round 3 will be 16 players which is 8 matches and I was hoping that as a nice little touch, maybe you guys at Sky could do the draw live on the Saturday or Sunday show this week. If this is ok, then I can provide you with the 16 names to go into the draw either Friday night or closer to the show.

    Lol- didn't ever say I was a Brummie! I lived for 20 years in Bromsgrove which is 20 minutes from the Hawthorns. I've been supporting the Baggies since I was 16, so that's, ahem, almost 24 years during which time for the most part they've been languishing in the lower divisions. In the late 80s, early 90s I attended almost all of their home games and quite a few away games too, as we played some of the giants of world football like, er, Barnsley and Huddersfield.

    So, I've paid my dues and no-one can accuse me of being a glory hunter now that West Brom are firmly lodged in the Premiership and are one of the in-form teams right now behind only the likes of Man City, Man U, Spurs and Arsenal- and well ahead of Chelsea! Sorry, couldn't resist the brag!

    That all said, I expect Paul's credentials will be better than mine- his Black Country accent suggests to me he was born no more than a stone's throw away from the ground, possibly in the terraces! Lol.

    Moving from tournaments to cash. IMO this is probably the hardest thing ive ever done since i started playing poker. The best advice i would offer is do this as early in your poker life as possible. The reason i say this is the more you get used to tournaments the harder cash is imo.

    I think the transition is very difficult but is very doable.

    No better time than the present :) I think that NL4 is fairly easy - A lot of players at that level will make amateur mistakes. People calling big bets trying to hit a gutshot without the odds to do so, then folding the river when they miss, is one that I have seen quite regularly in my time playing at NL4. There's a very good series of articles by DOHHHHHHH in the Poker School which is well worth a read.

    I don't raise with the intention of stealing the blinds as much - In tournaments, the blinds can be a large % of your stack, especially in the later stages, whereas in cash, the blinds are very small in relation to your stack.

    Also, at the low stakes, don't try to bluff people unless you know they'll fold, because you will find a lot of players who don't understand that you're trying to represent strength and will just call anyway.

    What level should you start at and when do you you're ready to move up to the next level?

    NL4. As for the 2nd part of the question, I've been wondering the same thing myself.

    we were neighbours then i went to school in Blackwell a small village back then in the 50s it was called hunters hill, i was a boarder there. Bromsgrove was 5 min down the road.

    Richard despite the jokes is a very proficient player, he's played many thousands of hands and has analysed countless others in the company of experts on TV.
    Is it possible to coach him to cash in a major Tournament? what talent do you possess that gives you the edge?

    Mathematics?
    Confidence?
    Calculated risk?
    Experience?
    Variety? 

    I know it's a combination of these and other factors but which do you think are most important and how do you restore the balance when things are going wrong?

    Hi Paul,

    If you want to post the names up on the forum- I'm happy to do the draw for you and post the results, tie by tie, on the same thread as I pull the names from a bag.

    That way, it's definitely fair, had been drawn by an independent adjudicator and an official Sky Poker face!

    Best of luck for the show tonight Mr Orford. I was on your table last night when you exited and didn't have time to ask about tonights show. Now I've read the thread I can answer. I am really interested to know if your esteemed guest thinks it is essential to move from MTT's to Cash? I play MTT's only at the moment and don't think I need to change 'codes'.
