The Dude's DYM Survival

edited December 2011 in Poker Chat

I've been playing cash for a while but a couple of weeks ago just suddenly lost all interest in it and once that happens the will to go back just isn't there. Of course I still needed a poker fix so just played MTT/Deep stacks for a bit but don't always like finishing really late so was in a bit of a muddle.

It's fair to say I've always been opposed to DYM's and still am tbh but one afternoon I just wanted a game that wouldn't last 3-4 hours and wasn't cash so DYM was the only option left. It was just a 30p one at first but pretty quickly I got hooked again, not sure what it is but just the structure and the way they're like little puzzles you have to solve was really addictive.

Well eventually I had to decide which level to play and with the rake being crazy at 30p/60p and still 15% at £1.15 I plumbed for £2.25 and with £50 giving me 22 and a bit BI’s it seemed a safe start point.

Now for the cold hard facts, it hasn’t started perfectly, 58 games in and I’m dead even 28 – 28 therefore I’m already down to £36.85 (also played one £1.15 which I somehow managed to win) so it has now become a matter of survival hence the title. I could move down the levels as appropriate but I can’t really be bothered with that so will just keep playing till I go broke or get to £72.60 (22 BI’s at £3.30).

Anyway I’ll be keeping this thread updated after each session to see if it is possible to last a month!

Good luck everyone else with any goals you have this month :)

i prefer mtts but cash is where the the money is mtts is just such high variance so can go a long time without a win even a month but nothing like the feeling the buzz of getting to a final table of a big tourney no better feeling i play cash for the grind really i dnt enjoy it as much as mtts but cash pays for my tourneys

Nice one Dude, good luck mate! I'm certain you will succeed with this barring -touches wood- some crazy run bad early on. Think you will steam through the levels as soon as you get going, I will follow with interest.

    Good luck Dude !

There are some really bad players at £2 DYM, some of the play will amaze and frustrate you no end especially when you bust

I may do my own little DYM experiment starting at £1, just for a change of scene.

Well first proper session 10 games and yet again I manage to keep up my impressive symmetry by getting 5 - 5.

In terms of exit hands first was a btn shove with 96 blind stealing called by KJ, those are the ones that really hurt tbh it's like just fold your K high, he had about 15bbs at 75/150 too. Two more were getting short 7-8 bbs and shoving into AK, AQ and KQ respectively, standard obvz. 4th was another 'just fold you silly bad player' limp calling my AK all in with 33, he had 20 bbs at 100/200 as well so zero need but nevermind. Final was interesting one that I'll post, AA big raise pre, get open shoved on with player bheind left to act.

Yeah I think you should cruise through this if you got the discipline which I'm sure you do from your cash days.

I went through a like £30 down run on the £5.50s when I first started but then when the run bad ended got an £80 up swing to cancel that out, so it's easy done when you can win a few races.

Didn't get chance to play any yesterday as was out all day in Newcastle watching Chelsea cheat us out of the game :). Got back on it this afternoon but again just 6 played and after a bad start ended 3-3.

1st exit was standard 39o 3BBs at 200/400 into A8. 2nd close one player limps at 75/150 gets to me in SB with 8 BBs and A4 next hand will be 100/200 I shove thinking as they've limped a lot so could have massive range, they call with 66 I miss mabe too wreckless but it's close imo. 3rd another super standard J8 in SB w/4 BB's into JJ gg.

Slightly longer session this evening of 9 games and a pretty decent one ending 8-1 to me.

Only exit hand was AJ shove into 88, me 7 bbs at 150/300 he has 11 bbs so pretty easy fold for him but he didn't sadly.

Really nice to finally get into profit, just gotta stay there now !

    Good session mate.

    Yeah nice work.

How many tables are you playing at a time? I only ask because when I was playing them I hated only playing like 2 at a time cos I couldnt fit many in per day and so progress was slow, but then when I played more tables, I think it affected the quality of my decisions when a couple of them got short-handed at the same time.
  • edited December 2011
Well I've decided to only play max of two at a time right now as BR is still on life supprt, when I get up towards £70 I might try 3. Progress like you say isn't amazing but I still get same points playing 11 of these as I got playing cash most days and if I played one more it would be increased by a 3rd.

One thing I do like about these is you can plot exactly how much profit you might finish in according to games you play like 9-1 or 8-2, shame it's a massive £4 difference if you get the worse one lol

Only managed 3 games tonight with DTD being on, unfortunately lost all 3.

1st a good one, AA min raise at 150/300 get call by guy with 5bbs, flop KT4 he has AJ calls AI hits Q lovely. 2nd a standard shove w/QQ with 9bbs called by AJ and lose. Final one 4 handed btn shove w/A8 big stack finds AA lol. These games certainly test ya ;).

Sometimes you get sessions like that mate, every flip loses and loose callers hit miracles.  Maybe a good thing that DTD intervened.  Better luck next session mate.

Finally managed to get in a proper session, 12 games, and went nicely in my favour 9-3, one of those sessions where you get loads of those early double ups and pretty much just coast home.

1st exit was standard all in in SB v BB 65 called 99. Next very similar A3 2bbs at 300/600 run into QQ although from experience I know that's a very even all in lol. Last was a weird one that I'll post in clinic, I think I played it ok but maybe too aggro.

Anyway back into profit, just need that break through session to pass £60.

Was gonna play bit more than 7 tonight but could feel the run bad really getting stuck in so thought call it a day, 4-3 against me.

1st a goody, someone open limps at 50/100 I have KK make it 3x they call obvz, 988 flop I bet they call, they shove turn have K8 lovely. Next J6 Btn shove w/4bbs at 200/400 big stack makes bad call with A2 and holds. 3rd A3o shove w/~8bbs at 75/150 called by big stack with QJ, always love those calls normally, I refer to them as freebies but they hit sadly. Final a real killer last hand played A9o shove on BB from SB for 8bbs he has 17bbs and calls with KJ obvz K first card out, they always hurt the most for me.

Still in profit just about, goal for end of month is essentially not to go broke but would like to finish on at least £60 (plus £15 C4P) so can have 2 pops at £3.30 level, obvz getting to £72.60 off my own back would also by nice :).
