Generating profit

edited January 2012 in Poker Chat
Hi, i am a low stakes player simply because i cant afford much more, i play everything from cash to MTT to DYM etc i consider myself a 'decent' player and try to do things properly but can very rarely generate any profit, and when i do make a profit its never enough to go 'wow'. I genrally play 5p/10p cash tables and MTT tourneys that cost no more than £5.75 (bounty hunter) has anyone any ideas on how i could be more efficent/profitable? thanks

Hi,I only play small stakes now as got no luck on higher levels,I think the mon night dtd torns are good value and the orfordable torn is good aswell,If you want to show profit id just play 2/4 nl pence not pounds lol and play for a month or two ie if you have £30.00 play until you get to 100 then move up to 4/8 etc.gl m8

I usually stick to the one format for example cash, mtts, stts and start with small deposit whatever you can afford to start your bankroll if your playin 5p/10p you should really have no less than £200 if you want 2 take it a little more serious and get your bankroll increasing.

But you should after playing post a few hands on the forum hands you think you could have done a little better or even hands you feel you played well and people on the forum will give you their opinions which may help gl at the tables

    As above really.

Try and work out  which format you are most successful with, and stick to it for a bit.

If its cash, start at the bottom. Multitable at 4nl rather than playing 10nl.

In MTTs, BHs may be attractive because there is more chance of getting something back, but the deepstacks reward good play more.

STTs are difficult when trying to build BR from the start because of the rake on the low levels. You need to be confident of winning 7/10 and rolled to play at £3.30.

if u ever want to generate a bigger bankroll, you will have to start playing the main events, sat s run all day and you can make it for under £3.. if you cash in one of these after sating in the boost you will get to your bankroll will be sufficient to move upwards...and there is always a chance you might hit the top ten...

    good luck..

Cheers lads, some good advice! My problem is, i go for the big wins straight off and end up losing... instead of starting at the bottom and gradually working my way up. I think i might start playing £3.30 DYM with the odd MTT and build my bankroll, THEN start playing in the bigger buy in tournaments :) keep your advice coming!

    3.30 x 40 = £132

    22 wins @ £6 = £132

win 22 of 40 and youve taken all day break even but youve probably learned something. Like you have eye strain from all those hours, your wife has packed her bags and left and the kids have destroyed their rooms.

So improve your strike rate so u can treat the family to reduce the guilt you feel from spending your spare time on line. And smashing the lap top at the suck outs youve suffered in those 40 games, ignoring the dog whinging to go for a walk til its too late....  just one more game and youll be level again....

    or get a poker/life/work balance.

Alternatively, divorce her, sell the dog, and when that strike rates up, use it for the maintainance for the kids and D2N till the cows come home ;)

    Decisions decisions !

Although making a profit at the £3.30 DYM's is do able its a very long and hard grind to do this you really need to be playing 5-6 tables at a time for a couple of hours a day.  even if you break even doing this you will earn a small amount from C4P.

Devonfish has a good DYM thread  "DYM have your say" would be good to ask questions about playing DYM's on there.  Devonfish has been on a bankroll building mission on these and is doing really well.
Also i know a player just plays DYM's at the 5.50 level but he is on another level and plays 150 - 200 games a day so between 22000 and 30000 C4P a month.  even if he breaks even he will make over £1000.

But building a bankroll is not easy and it is a massive grind! BANKROLL MANAGEMENT is key.  Chris Ferguson made $20000 from a starting roll of 0 just to prove it could be done using good skills but mainly good bankroll management. On cash games not playing with more than 5% at any 1 time and when he won more than 10% of his BR he would leave the table and join another.

anyway good luck at the table chris
