What is this game?

edited April 2013 in Poker Chat
Evening all. Writing to see if anyone has heard of this fun poker game that has taken my local pub games by storm. We call it "Battleships" but nobody seems to know the origins of it.

Its played heads up for a predetermined wager. Each player is dealt five cards horizontally face up and then you take it in turns to draw a random card off the top of the deck. Each of your five starting cards now becomes like a solitaire column, you choose which column to place the card you drew from the top. The objective is to create 5, five card poker hands, the best you can.

Once all cards are drawn, 2 will be left behind, you compare column v column. Whoever wins 3 or more columns wins the game.

Anybody understand/heard of this before? If so does it have a real name?

Cheers, Reece

Nothing personal, but sounds like the most donkalicious "poker" game I've ever heard :P

With a microscopic  skill edge (at best, and even saying that is being generous here), it's unsurprising that this game'll be totally unfamiliar to the masses, and will never see the light of day to the general public as a poker variant.

Chinese Poker (Open Face, or Regular) has a very small skill edge, but is popular because there is still a little skill there, involves alot of decision making, and is extremely entertaining (and sweat-filled!).

The 'Battleships' game as described just sounds like reeling cards off the top of the deck seeing who'll make the best hand, winning an almost literal coin-flip. Personally, I'd just save myself 5minutes of redundant card-dealing and watching the other player make the most standard decisions in games of cards, and just call Heads and admit to being the true degenerate I am.

Again, nowt personal, just no surprise it's taken off, get them into Chinese poker! (will probably be quicker and can involve up to 4 players too!)

Oh I totally agree theres no modicum of skill involved! I've just learnt about OFCP, and going to have a few games of it next time I can.

"Battleships" is a completely degen game with no skill, but since all the pub donks saw me play it the first time, they play it all the time on the side now after the regular NLTHE tourney in all the local pub games and even at my local casino in tourney breaks etc!
