Bluffing Aces:(

edited May 2013 in The Poker Clinic
This hand here it is against same opponent at the other hand.

I am just having a stab at it, i was going to 3 barrell it when it's just getting checkedback to me. There is 4 cards to a straight on the board. At the last minute, i thought the jig was up so just checked back. I was even thnking opponent might be sitting with the straight, i felt i had to give up.

Knowing what he had, i don't think this was ever getting folded, unless it was a massive bet, plus he had the stack to call. Any thoughts?

bluffing at nl4 is just bad generally. more soi wen they have overpairs
  • edited May 2013
Just looking back at this hand, i did need 2 3 barrell and it was getting through most times.
  • edited May 2013
why the ********* are opening Q7o in utg? Never mind @ 4nl. That's just bad to begin with..

The cbet is pretty bad too. We're just throwing away money. ESPECIALLY @ 4nl.

Bet bigger ott if you're going to bet, but villain is not folding any hand that he called with otf. ANY. If this was a higher limit, I like your idea because he has to fold a lot of his range to a third barrel, but honestly just play completely abc @ 4nl

    Got the 'aggressive' bit.

Now need to fix the 'tight' part, and we're in business! :D
  • edited May 2013
    Cheers Percival and Dohhhh.

i'll get working on the "tight" play tomorrow lol
  • edited May 2013
Yes, as others have said (or implied), you're trying plays you've seen on Mastercash and trying to translate it  to 2p/4p tables.
  • edited May 2013
Hate to sound like a nit, but Q7 utg...... just fold pre!
  • edited May 2013
    Pre is really bad

    Flop is really bad

    Turn is really bad

Larson you have got the aggression part correct. but it needs more than just aggression if you are going to bluff.
1)you need to have the image of a tight aggressive villain, who does a bet or raise as soon as the card has come.
2)start of with semi bluffs which you have a straight and/or flush draw.
3)once villians start folding lots of them you can now begin to do total bluffs but only OTB.

    as for hand selection.
stay tight preflop when OOP cbets are ok with hands such as AK or KQ but don't bother cbetting on the flop with pairs88 and less.

OTB, i decided to make a move, my cards were irrelevant.

I dont like the raise pre, it should be higher, and the bets on the flop turn are way to weak.

Just in this instance, opponent had a monster.

I dunno, if i bet big on river, or shove, i dont think im getting called. At the end of the day it's only a pair of aces!

Maybe not, my line was so bizarre through out the hand, it prob would need to be a shove to get opponet of the hand.

Larson here was that hand you got me to fold
TBH you were quite lucky because all i could see you likely to hold is Jxs Axs or a 33 as you just limped preflop if i were to put you on a set everytime you raised it would make it too easy to bluff which is why i still called the flop with the turn when i then saw a second J it was then that i decided fold is best because not only an i now behind to a set but also any J too so i just have to fold as i would never put you on a big pair 99+ when you limp. if it were a spade or any other card i would probably go with a reraise.

what i was thinking was with me holding both the flush and straight draw and knowing that he has bet on the flop i couldn't see him likely to hold a 10 so on the turn i decided to make a bet as i if was representing that 3rd 10 knowing that if he raised i could still call with my draws. knowing that he didn't raise on the turn what that did was allow me the chance to bluff the river myself and if i still did get called i could just look at that river value bet as what i expected to be added on the turn by him raising.

Ul Craig, i put you on a hand there but never kings.

The jack on the turn was a good card for me 2 barrell with. The only thing you were beating was a bluff.

If you 4 bet me on the flop i am away like a shot. In saying that, it did look like pocket 3s or 6s.

Outside of that, you were owning the table.

No offence Craig but you've told Larson to stay tight preflop in terms of hand selection when OOP then posted a hand where you limp along with K4s in the SB.

C-betting (or not) should be based on the flop texture and what we think of the opponent. There are plenty of times where we should be c-betting certain flops 100% of the time (regardless of our holding) against weak opponents who just c/f everytime they miss a flop.

it was based fully on me being the SB holding a suited hand and not being raised that I did the limp. if a villain had raised even the minimum I would fold and knowing that only the big blind remains the chance of being raised is very low.
the reason I myself didn't raise was because I will then be most likely to only get the limpers with strong hands to call
