A Diary: DYM Laddering and other stuff...

edited June 2013 in Poker Chat
Hey all, I'm looking to get involved more with the community side of the site so I'm giving something back after taking in so much advice from these forum pages.. my diary!

I'm mostly going to focus on DYM's , but occasionally like to mess around in other forms of poker if I make enough of a profit. (freerolls, satellites, heads up, those sorts of things ).

Anyway, for the purpose of the beginning of this diary , I'm going to bring it back down to basics and begin with £26.44, which is plenty for me to start tearing up the £1.15 DYM level ! I see no real value in the £0.60 level with profits being so small, so this is the perfect starting place imo.

My first poker session of the diary started amazingly well, currently trying my luck at the DYM laddering challenge so took in a £0.60 session and a £1.15 session x2, finishing in the money on all three occassions. (Waiting for the variance to batter me down to earth :D )

First question for you guys , even though this hand propelled me up to 4,000 chips and roughly 33% of all chips in play, did I play this correctly?

My logic was given the pre-flop action, an A or K was in the villains ranges and therefore I could still get away from QQ on the flop if any of those cards come down, as I'm just looking to survive.

Also tried a £20 Gtd Turbo freeroll for 10 Points, had a decent run doubling up on the first hand with AK after shoving pre-flop, and a call with J6 offsuit! Finished a respectable 38th / 190, but still the bubble escaped me. I have to say it was highly enjoyable, with players dropping like flies and chips moving around at lightning pace, but I still miss the old freerolls that allowed for longer play, and greater rewards.

I will return this afternoon for more £1.15 DYM action , and hopefully ladder up the DYM challenge on the £2.25 level!

BR = £28.54

Any advice or anything contributed to this diary will be great, and gl at the tables all!

    Hi Tom,
Just a quick question about the hand.
If your plan was to get away from it if an Ace or King came on the flop why did you re-raise preflop?
Not a criticism - just an observation. :-)

Probably bump into you on the tables as i play DYM's

Tom when he 4 bets you just shove on him you cant go ahead and just assume he has a ACE or KING in his range then fold if one drops as % of the time it will happen.

Alot of the time he will do the same thing with say qj j10 eg and c bet the flop and your gunna just fold which is a leak.

Sein as min raising is the way these days he could also be doin this with small pairs 33/44/55 so just go all in calling 1/3 of your stack when the blinds are relativly high isnt the way to go.

So just ship over the 4 bet and get rid of one of the other players and be heads up.

    Cheers Vespa,

I should have mentioned that the game had massively tightened up at this point, and I thought perhaps even a min re- raise could take him off the hand, and make my all-in look believable on the flop following my plan should a dry flop fall down. Looking forward to seeing you on the tables!

Also kidwiz I take on board your point, shoving pre and going heads up is more profitable in the long term. This is one of the biggest reasons I begun this diary , to find leaks in my game and take on board some advice. In DYM always in the back of my mind is survive, survive, and I thought roughly 1,200 chips would be enough should I get away from QQ , but looking back I think it was a mistake.

My nightly poker session carried on the good results , and fortune (most of the time) , meaning I cashed in 3 / 4 £1.15 DYM's, meaning a session profit of £1.40, and a profit for today of £3.55.

Was hoping to continue my DYM laddering challenge at the £2.25 level, but figured building my BR is the main priority of the moment. Fancied another Turbo freeroll, but the next 1.00am tourney is just too unsocial for me ... so it will have to wait.

Some interesting highlights of the night included these two CONSECUTIVE hands ...

Standard stuff short-stacked really, my 400 odd chips were virtually flying into the middle the moment I saw paint on my card. Have never run into AA twice in a row, but in another session I shoved short-stacked into the blinds with K3, had a call with K5 and managed to bink a 3, so what goes around comes around I guess.

I think overall my strategy has been spot on, been lucky in a few spots, just need to keep going and ride out any variance that comes my way.

So overall a good day.   BR = £29.94

My first BR target is the 22BB point for the next DYM level, £49.50 , so time to spin up another 20 quid!
