It's right that he only has 17% yes. You have his FD covered, he has 2 under cards to your pair and a GS, so he needs to either hit a 4 outer, or running 44, 55, or 45, both are pretty unlikely things.

Yes in fact on the flop his equity is 17.9% from pokerstove. He needs the 3 so 4 outs. He needs to catch a non diamond 3 or runner runner non diamond 4's or 5's.I supose he thinks his flush if hitting would win though i'd have thought your raise would give him a bad feeling.

in all fairness to opponent think i play the hand the same way because he ain`t goin to be crushed like that all the time.

3 of diamonds gives him the straight flush.
