should i have did a raise the flop or should i have just folded

when he does the raise preflop one part of me thinks he could be thinking I am trying to steal the blinds while the other half put him on a decent hand so I went for the call which then give me the biggest problem of all a 9 high flop and if that's not bad enough I also faced a big bet.

the reason I did call the flop was I thought to myself if the turn shows anything between smaller than J then surely the hands containing two overcards will think of checking the turn as their are lots of suited connectors that will have hit the flop.

Definitely don't raise flop, if you have the best hand raising folds out all hands that you want to call

Ok lets look at this.

  Calling a 3-bet in position with suited connectors is a move for cash and very early levels of a tourney. You are sat less than 50bb deep so a marginal call but not the worst in the world.

 So now we come to the important bit of it. What range do we put him on and what sort of flop do we want to be hitting. The flops we are looking for are flush draws, straight draws or even 2 pair hands. We cant be looking for 1 pair hands here because they are weak and will still put us behind a large portion of their 3-betting range.

 The flop is where this hand is critical. It is here that we have the odds for our draws and if we hit good can look to be getting it in.By good i mean 4 to the flush or oesd.We are not looking to be floating or calling to hit runner runner draws or just hoping we are ahead. Your comments say that immediately discounted most of his possible range of holdings preflop and just put him on 2 big cards. I see no reason for this assumption. By calling the flop you have now committed over a quarter of your stack with a weak holding hoping that you are good or will get lucky.

 You pick up a draw on the turn and give away the rest of your stack to chase it pretty much knowing you are behind and hoping to get lucky. You are not pot committed at this point and can fold leaving yourself a playable stack.

 Suited connectors are a good hand to play but they need to be played well. Discipline down the streets is essential with these hands as well as the ability to range the opponent. We need this to get paid as well as know where we are. Committing large amounts of our stack with a one pair hand and only back door draws is not the way to go.

 As far as this hand is concerned. On that flop you either shove or fold you do not call because then you just get asked another question on the flop which could be for your tourney life.
