Life lessons from playing poker

edited December 2009 in Poker Chat

I’ve had a little think about life lessons which can be learned from the table so I’ve taken a few clichés and added to them. Not too serious, but maybe there’s something in here for people to mull over. Here goes:
Don’t continue to put money in the pot just because you’ve started out on it.Just because you’ve spent 10 years in a job, or relationship, it doesn’t mean you should spend the next ten. Only do this if it’s worthwhile on its own.
Be selective.Love, life, friends, family, they’re worth fighting for. The best table in the restaurant is not.
Either play aggressively or fold.Either do something with passion or don’t do it. There are just so many things in life you can positively spend your time doing.
Fortune favours the brave.Everyone you know who you admire got there because he was willing to take risks. Life is not for those timid souls who always sail close to the shore.
Learn to deal with bad beats.Sometimes life just isn’t fair and things just don’t go our way. Sometimes you don’t get the promotion you deserve, sometimes your love is unrequited. Shrug your shoulders, learn from it and move on.
Don’t bluff if you’re going to be called.Don’t try to blag your way through life - have some substance.
Know the players sat at your table.Take the time to listen to friends, family and colleagues. It will pay itself back many times over.
Every hand is a new one.Every day is a new one - every day is a fresh start. You can’t change the past so don’t try, but you can change the future.
Don’t rattle the fish tank.Look after those you meet on the way up. Inevitably you will meet them on the way down.
Don’t take your wins too seriously.Triumph and disaster - treat those two impostors just the same.
Never stick around trying to get even. You already are even. Every moment is a new one, every opportunity is a fresh one.
Be the first to act.Don’t let life control you - You control your life.
Raise for information. When you ask a question in life, listen to the answer and act on it. Don’t stubbornly press on regardless.
Know when to hold em, know when to fold em.Don’t keep banging your head against a brick wall. Learn when it’s best to change tack.
Plan your play before the flop.Try to work out your route, try to anticipate the obstacles, and try to work out how to overcome them before you even set out.
