risky calls?

edited August 2013 in The Poker Clinic
I did try a pot odds calculator and it did say that the size of the pot on the turn for the call needed to be £11.59 which is only slightly more than it is. at the time of the hand I made the call based more on the fact I had put a large amount in on the flop.

with this one it is a similar sort of hand to that other straight flush one only this time I decided to make the jam on the turn as I did have top pair so a 9 or a J I thought might help me as wellof course I would have did a min raise on the flop had he decided to make a cbet  but he decided not to so my guess was 10 8 or he has 98 maybe even A8s in which case I would be ahead at the minute.

    Hand 1)

Pre is fine.  However on the flop we are donk lead into then reraised massively.  Im folding here almost all of the time (the 10% I do play it I shove - I'm never ever calling).  I just dont think we have the odds to call, especially as 2 of our 8 outs are dirty (hearts for the flush draw).  I think we are drawing pretty thin here and im not happy with any turn card that isnt an Ace or 8 or diamonds/spades and clubs.  Think we need to fold flop here.  Remember with the odds calculator that you can't win all of 'y's money as he covers you on the turn.  The effective pot for you is less than £10 here.  Again I think we need to fold the turn.

    Hand 2)

Well we have a million outs (or at least it looks like it).  However I dont think we should be going broke here.  Yes we have a lot of outs, however we only have one card to come.  At the time the money goes in we have a pair of jacks.  Im more inclined to call the turn raise and reassess river with the look to call a small bet if we brick or even consider folding.  If we hit then we can look to get paid on the next street.  When you shove you are almost always only going to get better hands to call and know you have to hit with a single card to come.  If the flop was J108 (2spades) I'd be more inclined to pile the money in, but think we have to play a bit more conservatively on the turn.

Hand 1 - fold flop - I don't even think we're getting the price (including implied odds) if we know our OESD is good, especially if we think Ah and 9h might be no good cos we're likely to see a FD from 1 opponent. Super easy fold on the turn when our equity has just been halved.

Hand 2 - I raise pre over the limpers. As played we should deffo lead the flop seen as no1 has the lead and we've smashed the flop. As played, it's probably good getting it in on the turn but I prefer to 3bet the turn and call it off, than make a massive overshove which is likely only gonna get called by hands we're behind to.

what got me to just call was his minraise pre I thought would either be an A or a pocket pair and with me being OOP I really was just going to attempt a check raise if a flush does come thinking he is going to probably do a 5p bet on the flop.
so when he then checks the flop my guess was he missed but when he does a raise on the turn I was already thinking he must have a monster 2 pair or better and I was probably drawing to a flush straight maybe a 3rd J and if I did do a reraise I thought he would then go for the trapping trick plus if the spade did come then I could only see him calling if he had a straight.
some people have even folded a river when their stack is 93p and the pot was already £5+
