Flushes!

edited October 2013 in The Poker Clinic
Came across an unusual situation in a BH recently and realised that there is something fundamental that I don't actually know. I decided to air on the side of caution, but here is the hand I'm referring to.

Obviously there is a flush on the board, should I have called on the river? I mean we both had flush to the Ace - but if he had say, the queen of diamonds, and I called, would he win the pot or would it be split?

    Ditch this hand pre.

And never ever call the river.  Its the top 5 cards.  Even if he has the 8 of diamonds he beats you.

you are beat if villain has any of 8TJQd ie a higher flush than is on the board

... or if villain has 58d or 8Td to make the str8 flush

given it for your tournament with not much invested has to be a fold although players can make a move here to nick a pot that should be split

    ^^^ This

    Fold pre.

Definitely fold the river, it's based on all 5 diamonds used to make the flush so as Gazza said if he has 8+ diamonds, you lose. Also which should a massive overbet shove, I'd be pretty confident he has Qd or maaaybe 8Tdd
