When my wife, Lynne lost the battle with her illness last year we knew that she would not want people to buy flowers but for any money to be donated to a worthwhile cause. It was at that time I found the Ann Rowling regenerative neurology clinic. This had been started by J K Rowling (whose mother had died from multiple sclerosis) with a £10 million donation. The initial target was £50 million to build the centre to carry out research into MS, motor neurones disease and other neurological problems. They have now raised the initial £50 million to get the centre up and running. To date (with other fundraising) I am proud to say that we have raised over £5,000, a significant amount of that was raised at an SPT thanks to tremendous work from Irene, Samantha and Tikay

and I thank all of you for your donations, Lynne would be so proud of you all.

Today was the grand opening of the centre so I flew to Edinburgh at an unearthly time this morning as I was kindly invited to attend. It was opened by Princess Anne & J K Rowling. It was a really high profile event, BBC TV cameras and press were there and I was very impressed with the event. We also looked round the centre and looked at some of the research and medical trials they are carrying out. We met some famous people, some wonderful people who have raised significant fundraising and the great staff of the centre. We also met many people who are living with MS and motor neurones disease, we have seen what this centre has meant to them.

From the 18 years Lynne lived with MS I know how frustrating it was being passed from pillar to post to different departments in hospitals, waiting for weeks for results and feeling you were fighting a battle with the red tape and taking one step forward and two steps back. I can see with this centre today that those days are changing, here you see all the specialists together in a single visit and results follow quickly. More importantly there is a support system , you are not alone and there is even a quiet room to talk privately about concerns. It is a state of the art centre which lacks for nothing. The centre is liaseing with other establishments so work is not duplicated

The aim of the centre is to find a preventative cure for MS and other diseases, to treat Ms and also to start to repair the damage caused to the nervous system by the disease.

This will be a long journey but the buzz around the centre is exciting, it feels like the first steps have been taken and that in time there will be great progress made.

So thank you for your donations, they have made a difference and I am proud of what you have all helped to start with this centre being opened.
