Could I have got away earlier?

edited November 2013 in The Poker Clinic
Got a hand here from quite a while ago - can't really remember what the tournament was to be honest, but I would like to know if you guys think I could have got away earlier.

My thoughts: Loose raise with A8, even in position. I must have not played a hand for a while and fancied some action, or saw the other players on the table as weak. Called the all-in pre-flop because it was only 290 more to call, and I had a decent stack size. Further call of 200 on the flop, again it is a small amount, and I had hit the Ace. Decided to get away on the turn as OC1337's all-in was big - and that made three people all-in, surely someone had more than just a pair of aces?

As it turned out, they did - but could I have got away on the flop or turn?

I'm probably binning it pre to be honest. The stack sizes in the blinds, plus the limper, complicate things. A8 ain't a great hand, and we're not playing very deep poker, so I think I let this one go.

Had it been folded to me however, I'd just be putting both blinds all in.

I'm gonna guess it was a bounty hunter judging from the action ;)

Agree I think I bin pre but surely has to be call on turn! Oc guy has limped pre, flatted all raises pre, flat called flop when he had perfect chance to come over the top to go it alone for the bounties! Plus you're getting around 3 to 1 pot odds! I'd only say fold here because I can see hands but I think I call here! I know I'm likely behind one of the blinds but you only have to beat oc for a profit on the hand. As it is he's binked the 7s

Yeah you could get away pre as soon as you're 3bet

I think we should probably shove pre-flop having put in that 300 already.

The two blinds are going to have a very wide range and the limper figures to be weak. Shove over that and take your chances with the A8. We're getting the right pot odds to do that.

Not often I'd advocate 5-bet shoving with A8 but the only stack that threatens ours is the player with the weakest range. Force him out of the hand and realise your equity against the two shorter stacks with a fair chunk of dead money in the pot.
