fair play in live events

edited November 2013 in Poker Chat
on Monday I was playing in my local casino in leeds. we got down to three players left and this situation came about. I would like peoples response to it because I have received some rather nasty responses to it. where as I think I did the right thing.
I have a large chip lead (about a third of chips in play) and get 10 h 10s I shove. I get one caller who tables kh 10d. the board runs out J 7 Q Q and either 8 or 9 (the 9 giving my opponent the straight) the dealer awards me the pot with two pair. here the fun starts. both me and the player not in the hand think my opponent has made the straight and voice this to the dealer. the cards have been turned over and washed but I havnt stacked the chips. as we are unsure I ask for a camera check ( both my opponents are new to the casino and havnt played before so I want them to enjoy themselves and not feel robbed so they will return) the check is done and im wrong it was an 8 not a 9 so I have won. I apologise to the lad for prolonging his exit and to the dealer for doubting her call. the few players that were left on the rail couldn't belive I had done that and word has got round and im getting rather abusive emails about it. I would love to know what the sky poker thinks please.

    Morning Mr Bat.

Sky Poker as a Business won't have a view, as this was "Live" poker, but in my view, you acted perfectly correctly.

We need MORE of this attitude in poker. In golf, for instance, players almost always "self-police" to an obsessive degree, ditto in snooker (ON the table, not so much off....), & Poker needs more of this, imo.

It can never be bad, or wrong, to do the right thing in these spots. Ignore the haters, & ignore the Rail, it is none of their business.

I am unsure what the problem is, or why you have received dirty emails about it. Any decent player would have done the same thing. Dealers can make mistakes too.

playing live recently the bb was on the phone when the action came round to him, with the button flatting and sb making up. he checked while finishing the call. he then announced that he was going to self-impose a no-positive action on himself for that hand for having been on the phone. there was one raise during the hand that both players called and all three made it to showdown. He had flopped the nut flush! clearly a case of potential missed value, but he was determined to maintain his self-imposed penalty.

Hours later, as i went out in fourth place, I was heartened knowing that he was in the last three.

Always do what you think is right is a good way to live one's life. and in a topical analogy if i had been clearly caught behind, i would walk. anything else to me is clear "cheating" even if within the formal rules.
