Russian Roulette

edited November 2013 in Poker Chat
I wondered how the regs and 'proper' players on here (not counting myself in that group) use RR. I often go in for a few games from my phone as there's nothing to do once you register. I also have a tilt issue on RR when I've been knocked out or outdrawn then I bundle in for what is just a pure coin flip. Sort of get rid of frustration.
I'm trying to avoid it (iPad app will help pls Sky) as I do better with real poker but they do seem popular
Anyone play them much?

why anyone would gamble any sort of money on something where the odds are stacked against them is beyond me.. im sure if you wanted a pure gamble then you would be much better going to a casino and playing roulette at least that way the odds are only ever slightly against you. My personal advice would be avoid them at all costs and if you are on tilt then find something else to take your mind off it, will cost you a lot less in the long run

Yeah as Jordz said.... RR = burning money

They are right Das Boot. However I must point out I've seen Lambert180 entered into all-in sats many times, the multi-table equivalent of RR.

    #DoAsISayDontDoAsIDo ;)

Avoid them if you can, however if a couple of cheap RR games can act as a quick tilt cure it's probably not the worst thing in the world you could do. Buying into a game above your BR while streaming is likely to be far more expensive for example. The cat would much rather see you at a RR table than see the end of your boot. Your laptop would much rather have a RR table on its display than get hurled out of the window.

I'll be honest here, I've sat in a RR HU a few times when peeved at a bad run of luck. I don't regret it tbh, it did the trick and helped calm me down.

Pretty sure there used to be a player on here who played exclusively RR's  and who had a good roi?  I cant recall his/her name but it was something like "random18".
  • edited November 2013
yeah the all in sats are very similar, and i dont see the benefit long term in playing them, however a lot of times you get overlay and when thats the case you would be stupid not to enter them. also if you are a very low stakes player and limit yourself to one all in sat a night then i think that would be fine, as that one chance you do win it will give you the chance to experience a tournment out of your bankroll and that experience is invaluable in the long term.
  • edited November 2013
FWIW, as a general rule I usually only play all in sats when there is overlay so the extra money in the prizepool cancels out the rake I'm paying and makes them +EV :p

Might have entered the odd one in my time that hasn't had overlay but as similar to you it's uaully when I'm peeved at a run of bad luck

When there was a monthly STT league with cash prizes there were two or three high volume RR specialists. They would win the league (buy the league?) every month to the annoyance of DYM grinders, however they all ran at -10% ROI, or very close to it, and ended up losing money overall.

Many players would actually have better results if they played RR rather than their usual games. This applies to anybody with a long term ROI worse than -10%.

If you're a Sky Bet customer who doesn't have a clue how to play poker but fancies a quick gamble at a card table then RR is ideal.

i think all in sats for players like me might be burning money.

but for good players like lambert i think they might be +ev

a £11 entry fee for an average player is worth £11

for a good player, with a decent shot at cashing it maybe worth £14.

lambert might pay £1.20 for an £11 prize but if he has a MTT roi of 30% then the prize is worth more. so overlay, innit.

it was very clever teeks, but so is most of the thread!

fwiw i see many top players in the allinones, without overlay, and myself included from time to time. and as already mentioned these are RRs in all but name, despite Teddys ill-fated attempt to convince us otherwise. i guess it's a little of the lottery mentality ie i can win a lot for only a small potential loss so i'll take the flip even though we know it is -ev.

Deer Hunter? Who or what is that?

I agree as to light-hearted though. Jeez, some days I dread opening the Community, for fear of more serial chuntering. The world seems full of missogs some days. When I were a lad, if I'd moaned I'd have got a good slap, but in these enlightened times, that is generally disapproved of......

Dad, I don't want to go to school today.

Shut up, & eat your porridge before I give you a clip round the ear.

Fair enough, though at the time, it seemed rather (brace yourself...) gruel.......

I wasn't thinking of you funnily enough. The screen-name I have in mind still plays on the site (not RR anymore), so I won't be mentioning him here. He packed in a high volume for ages and his forum posts made it clear he was a very unhappy chap when the monthly leagues got scrapped.

    I disagee.

Let's ignore overlay for the minute. In the long run each seat won via an all-in sat costs you 10% more than a direct buy-in (assuming the all-in sat is raked at 10%, adjust as necessary). So a seat that costs £33 direct will cost £36.30 if you use all-in sats for example.

Therefore if we say Paul has an expected ROI in the tournament of 30% (again adjust as you see fit lol) he has already given up 10% of that by using the satellites, so it now falls to 20%. One third of his ROI has gone up in smoke before playing a single hand. Obviously doing anything that reduces your ROI is inadvisable.

Saying that, if as he says he only buys into carefully selected all-in sats that run with significant overlay, ie more than enough to compensate for the rake, then fair enough, that turns his all-in entries into a small +ev gamble and will have a positive impact on his ROI.

The best example was last nights all in sats, 1x £110 seat guaranteed £3 buy in, at first they were getting 50+ runners so i gave them a miss, but by 8 30 they were getting less than 30 runners and by 9 o clock they were running every minute with under 20 runners, i think everyone playing them was already in the tournament and just looking for the big value. I played about 15/20 of them and binked 2 seats after i bought it so from then on i felt like i was freerolling the event.
