Do we check back the river?

edited December 2013 in The Poker Clinic
This hand was from a deepstack and I had been at the opponents table since the start. Pretty standard stuff so far and I pick up QQ on the button I go for the re raise. Opponent flats and the flop is ok for queens.

Once we get to the river do we check it or ship it?

    Shipping all day here

I did ship it and got slow played played to death by KK lol

Just doubting myself after the events. I just wondered if there was any views as to not shipping it seeing as we had been called down all the way. I never gave the check back any thought at the time.

Any reads on villain? 3x UTG from most players is usually a tight range. Calling a 3b and then 2 bets on this board leads to an even tighter range. I think villain's worst hand on the river is tens, maybe nines. We lose to 88, KK and AA but beat 99, TT, JJ. But villain may sometime 4bet AA and KK but may also be more likely to fold 99-JJ post-flop. If this were just a cash game I'd say there is enough value to be had in shoving. But being a tournament we want to preserve chips where possible and only push in spots that are clearly very +ev. As this is close I couldn't fault checking back vs opponents that appear to be quite tight. JJ would most definitely be a check but QQ is borderline. KK and shoving then becomes mandatory!

    Reads? What are those lol!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The opponent had not got really out of hand. We had played a pot very early on when I had called down with pocket 8s on a 9 high board, only for him to show KK. His bet on the river (about half his turn bet) talked me into thinking he had a busted draw or AK and that is why I called it. So opponent knows we wont necessarily believe he has it and will call down light.

He had 3 bet his KK in the first hand and I think with him not 4 betting he cant have AA or KK, I was thinking 77+ up to JJ. He knows I am not going away on a low board with a pair so he could have easily had that.

In the end the guy couldn't have played it much better to get max value. If he 4 bets me pre I may even have to consider folding given the only time he had 3 bet a pre flop raise was with kings. As played I dont know if I should ever be checking.
