Question of the day - 09/12/13, decisions decisions!

Hi

What do you think when someone takes a long time over a decision? Especially when deciding how much to bet (rather when people dwell over a call).

We're sure you've seen some of the hands on 861 where it is obvious somone is going to bet for example, because (a) they have a strong hand and want to think about value, or perhaps (b) they know a bluff is the only way they can win etc.

Either of those could take thinking time for various reasons. There can be other facts at play too, like them playing many tables etc.

But also some people might take time because they want you to think they are strong or weak. And it's this we are interested in, so generally....

We're sure some people will say it depends but we're just interested in what your opinion is as to the most common reason.

It can mean all of them to be honest.

Players that take ages or do betting amounts such as "333" or "999" makes me just wanna strangle a cat period! most tilting thing lol.

So really it could mean anything to many tables , picking there snout or just no reason at all.

I vote for 'they have gone for a pee'.

Player dependant. I don't put too much emphasis on timing tells anyhow, betting patterns tell you more imo.

If I see a showdown after an usually long decision time at one of my tables the reason for it, if apparent, goes in notes for future reference.

Me personally, i use the time on decisions on mt own play and try not too rush into it, 

I try too keep that way even if im strong so there is no change in my play that another player could pick up on. So ill take the time on a bluff. And also if i have the nuts.

What can bug me a little tho (but understand why this happining) is, 

Last night in an mtt its gets too 7 players left on the bubble. 

I open the other table too see the stacks and who was short stacked.

What i found was one player using every second hoping someone would bubble at our table even tho there was no cards untill there hand was finished.

It really does depend on the player.

Some players it's always weakness, some players will purposefully try to send reverse tells, as most of these things it's all about knowing your opponent.

I normally bet pretty quick when i have the nuts, and maybe sometimes take my time before attempting an outragous bluff with complete air

Depends if he's trying to look weak or look strong........

If he's trying to look weak, buy him a walking stick.......:)

I am unable to vote as every player uses the time bar in a different mannor. Some use it in the same way to look weak, as others use it to look strong, some don't use it at all. I don't automatically assume either unless I have notes or have played the player many times.

As far as how I use it......well that would be telling , but sometimes I use it slowly to look weak and sometimes I use it quickly to also look weak (Button Bashing so to speak) again it depends on whos on my table and if there is anyone I know.

If the table is full of novices, i'm a 50/50 kind of guy (I don't swing both ways) Yet

I don't think you can generalise to the extent where any of the answers makes any more sense than the other three.

Personally, sometimes I go into a game and decide no matter what the cards (I sometimes cover them) on the first hand I will take 3 seconds to act, the 2nd hand I will take 25 seconds, on the 3rd hand I will take 11 seconds.............. No matter what the cards I will act as described,

I also decide things like I will all in every 6th hand no matter what lol. It seems to keep me playing without depositing so I'm happy.

GENERALLY I would say they are weak.

Sure, some people like to take time to make obvious decisions for deception, but the majority of players are not so cunning to be honest - in fact, I would go so far as to say that most players don't even realise that their response time can be a factor in the game.
