Why is this country so rubbish when bad weather hits?

edited December 2009 in The Shed
Seriously it's unbelievable!

I live in Bracknell (a few miles from Ascot for those who don't know) and today we've had snow like I've never seen before. My other half works in Slough which is about 15 miles or so away. She finished at 4:30 & now over 5 hours hours later she's still not home!!!!!

It's not like no one's given any warning that this weather was on the way but has anyone been out & gritted the roads.....................NO!

It really makes you wonder what exactly we pay out taxes for.

Sorry for the rant but just had to get it off my chest.

yep ive been to sweden - 4 foot snow and everything runs ok, ive been to canada (Newfoundland) 10 foot snow drifts, again everything fine. I think the problem is that we dont have enough government snow outreach workers, flood facilitators, or drought quango teams in the country, maybe if the government got rid of all the gritting teams, binmen, police, doctors and nurses etc etc and employed a few more of the more important 'specialist offshoot co-ordinators' (you think ive created a new job lol) i mentioned, things would run a lot more smoothly lol. One more point, every year that these events occur we are told its a 1 in a hundred years event lol

Nice post loony.....I went to Switzerland the other xmas and Geneva just carried on as normal despite 50 foot snow drifts.......220 mph blizzards.......minus 48.......and a bank holiday to boot!

The UK are just useless IMO ......WHATEVER the weather may be.
And BTW silent Bob....just seen your other half in this pub....totally hammered.....looked liked she had been in there a while...lol....:) Hope she gets back ok mate.

Doesn't help that we all drive around on summer tyres which don't work as well below 7c and are certainly not great in snow. Perhaps it should be law that we use winter tyres during a certain period.

Yeh great idea, and we could employ a new army of 'tyre inspectors' to dish out all the fines, lets say £80 lol, and if you live in the top floor of a block of flats you can store the summer ones under the bed.

Whatever happens it really is needed. They operate like that in other European countries. Mind you, one slight problem.... I'd have to downgrade to 18" wheels LOL. Can't get 265x30x19 winter tyres :-D haha

Couldn't agree more with you Silentbob. I live just outside Slough and It's been chaos, and as you rightly say, there hasn't been a gritter in sight.

It's clearing now Nosey. All the main roads round here are pretty much clear (or at least much better for driving). The only problem now really are the side roads & back streets. If you stick to the main roads you'll be fine.
