should i keep my betting weak as caller pre?

edited January 2014 in The Poker Clinic
last time it was 82 flopping quads now it's 1010 limping in then hitting a set
any hand that is not for set mining seem to kill me if I enter the pot as caller.

I understand that AKs is a hand that should be raised pre but at this early in the MTT all I can see happen is the weak hands fold and I get left with 1010+ so I decided to call as a way to allow weaker hands to remain in.
having hit my 2 pair on what is a really wet board I do a check raise and considering how wet the board is I was thinking surely QJ 1010 would raise me.
but no it turns out that he did have a set and waited for me to do a massive bet then jam.

Cooler hand - what can you do?

Flatting pre is fine as long as you know your never getting married to one pair hands. The big mistake is getting carried away when taking this line, your rarely ever good in a big pot multiway with one pair. Given the flop and action your never getting away and your practically never drawing dead if you are behind either.

The only gripe would be the pot bet on the turn. If he isnt as strong as that you get a lot of worse hands to fold. Your already committed to the pot so you may as well extract value from the hands your ahead of such as draws, worse 2 prs and pr and draw hands. A 1/2 pot bet is best as you can still easily get the rest of your chips in here or the river.

is it normally a much greater risk betting large in MTT than it is in cash.

the reason I ask this is I have learned in recent weeks that large chipstacks in the early stages of MTTs are virtually no use at all in improving the chance of winning.
so rather than getting massive value from them flush draws raggy aces and weaker 2 pairs should I just play it in a manner so that I avoid helping them hands that are ahead of me which it seems is what I did here.

The cold call on that flop c/r from you would concern me. Perhaps slow down on the turn.

I would still probably raise pretty big pre. I appreciate it's still early in the tournament, but AKs is such a strong hand and I'd wanna put the pressure on the other players. Doesn't mean that we have to barrell our stack off if we completely brick though.

You've kinda got stuck in the middle in this one; wanting to not get too carried away pre, but then the deck smacks you right in the face. It's an unfortunate flop, thats for sure.

In answer to your first question, only in relation to the fact you cant reload in MTT's. You could argue either point, betting smaller risks less of your stack but you price in draws more. You could talk for hours on this point, I would just stick to betting to the strength of what range you think your opponent has.

I dissagree what you say about having a large stack early, yes having a big stack doesnt entitle you to a win but neither does having a short stack mean you can never win. Its how you use it. Just view it as a way of getting deeper into a tournament. Still play your natural game and dont think you have a duty to bully the table because your a big stack, used controlled aggression to pick up pots and dont be afraid to back down when you meet resistence.
