Vegas trip advice?

edited January 2014 in Poker Chat
Looking into the option of going to vegas and playing some WSOP events and cash games, looking for tips on places to stay and poker rooms to play in while not at the rio.

Also will sky be running any sats this year?

Don't stay, or play cash at, the Rio.

    So much to do.

Just book a flight and then worry about the rest.

I would say generally that Coxy is right about not playing cash at the Rio.

However if you see Coxy on a PLO cash game, then jump right in and start thinking about what new car you're gonna buy, where you are gonna go on holiday too, what kind of extension you are gonna build etc with the impending wealth you are about to receive.

I got 99 problems, and PLO is the primary source of all of them

yea i have heard horror stories about the rio, i wont be staying or playing there, the trip would be poker and some drinking thrown in. I might either try sat into some events then worry about travel later or just sell action to the 1k and 1500 and play cash around the mtts.

Problem is my irl friends dont play poker so if i go with them it would be no business and all play. Why i think it might be best to win a package and go out with other packages winners. None o my poker friends are looking to go this year or arent old enough to plaY.

The Luxor is a nice cheaper option to stay at.

If you do go then just put a message on the forums.  People from here will def be around and more than happy to meet up for a drink/chat dinner :)

I think the Rio is fine to stay in as a hotel for a 1st time as then everything poker related is close.

They have STTs which are GREAT value too and the Rio Daily Turbos which are 235$ and have 50k$ up top for the winner so they're a must too.

    CAN NOT WAIT!

try the orleans hotel its were we go with red tooth poker and has a great poker room. it is about a 5 to 10 min bus ride {wich is free by the way}to the strip.  the rooms are great and there are 32 restaruants and bars in the hotel, as we as a 72 lane bowling alley and 6 cinema screens. the breakfast is worth buying as it all you can eat and the selection is fantastic. have fun matt

This thread brings back far too many amazing memories!

FWIW, I loved staying at the Signature. Yes it is a little way from the strip but no more than a 7-8 minute walk especially if you stay in tower 3, if you want to be closer to the main MGM then stay in tower 1 and you can be from your room to the MGM casino in under 5 minutes. The rooms at The Sig themselves are top class, you could live in them! Stay in the one or two bed balcony suite and you get a full kitchen, massive living area, massive bathroom with Jacuzzi, 3 amazing showers, a balcony overlooking the strip. Room Service was very good and this really is a top establishment. The only downside to it is the location as you can't step out of it and onto the strip but like I said above the strip really isn't far at all. It's closer to the strip than the Rio. We went to Penn & Teller at the Rio and it was a longer walk to the strip than from the Sig. The Sig is a top price as well, much cheaper than poorer quality rooms directly on the strip.

You sound pretty young saying most of your poker friends aren't old enough so if you're into the clubbing scene I would highly recommend Hakkasan at the MGM, just an amazing place and it is full of stunning birds! Pool parties are another must for me in Vegas. Encore Beach Club at the Wynn was a great afternoon for us and again full of stunning women! Food wise I would highly recommend the VIP buffet at the Wynn, absolutely amazing food and you'll be annoyed once you're full up! It was about 50$ but well worth the money for me! MGM Grand buffet is good as well but not quite up to the standards of the Wynn. Best bars I would say are either Deuces in the Aria, you can gamble in the bar there and the two towards the front of the Bellagio. Forgotten the names of those but again quality establishments. One final thing is get to the premium outlets before you leave where you can pick up Ralph Lauren polo shirts for as little as $15!

Vegas, what a place! I need to go again!

What would be people's advice on the best way to get a package to the wsop, even like to some of the side events, and which sites are best for this?

Just commenting on a few Posts......

    Orleans

It's fine, though suffers a little from being so far off-strip. There is a free shuttle, but doing that twice daily tends to wear a bit. They specialise in Hi-Lo Omaha, oddly, though mostly LIMIT, not PLO8. Good value Hotel, I would not put anyone off, I stayed there one year & loved it.

    Luxor

Lovely hotel, with the added bonus of being able to see the aeroplanes landing & taking off at McCarron Airport. Priceless, that. Bit of a way from the Strip though.

    Rio

It IS a bit "tired" these days, but it's fine, it really is. We see all the kids moaning about the Rio, but its a matter of perspective really. I spent most of my working life staying 3 or 4 nights per week in Travelodges, so when I am in a suite in Vegas in the Rio, it feels like a 5 star hotel to me. The atmo there during the WSOP is incredible, & they have fun tourneys every day, which are so easy that I know of at least two (admittedly quite good) Sky Poker players who won the Afternoon Deepie. Matt Bates also cashed in it, so it must be soft. Don't think he won though, he came up a bit short.

    Gold Coast

Smack next door to the Rio, but dirt cheap. Doubt you'd pay much more than $25 a night if you booked in advance & haggled a bit. Like ALL Vegas Hotels, it is fine.

    DownTown

This has not been mentioned, but you should consider it. Rates are FAR cheaper than the Strip, & the atmosphere in Fremont Street is simply amazing. Binions & Golden Nugget both run 2 or 3 "affordable" Tourneys every day during the WSOP. You've not lived until you've experienced Fremont Street at night. Long way from the Strip though, costs about $25 in a cab, or $2 on the "Deuce" bus. The Deuce bus (named because fares are a flat $2) is a really nice bus.

    Best CardRooms

So many of them. Caesars is arguably the best "feel" cardroom in the world, the Tourney room is simply breathtaking.

Venetian is lovely, the kids chunter about the structures, but the Hotel - the biggest in Vegas I believe - is an out of this world experience.

Aria is fantastic, as is Encore

Downtown, (primarily Binions & Golden Nugget) well, if you are the type who chunters about bad Dealers, don't bother, the Dealers are nothing short of (technically) awful. But.......they are also the greatest, they talk to everyone, introduce themselves, & they generate a wonderful fun atmo, almost like a home game. The minimum age of the dealers Downtown is 85. Play there on Day One & they'll ask your name. Turn up there again 3 days later, & they'll remember your name, where you come from, da de da. FWIW (very little I guess) I play most of my Vegas Tourney Poker Downtown. Love it to bits.

Will Sky Poker be running Viva Las Vegas Satellites?

To be honest, I've no idea. There were some realy difficult technical obstacles last year, but they ran every year prior to that. I expect we'll hear soon.

    Vegas baby!

Like most players I love Las Vegas.

Best advice, check out allvegaspoker.com they list reviews for every poker room and the games and tournies they normally have running.

I'd find a poker room that I wanted to play in then look on tripadvisor.com for a nearby hotel that I could afford.

TIKAY, can we please have Viva Las Vegas back.....pretty please!
(Lots of nice buses in Vegas: bendy ones, hydrogen powered etc.)

Oh did I mention that it's 13 days until my next Las Vegas Adventure!!!!!!!!!!
    Bring it on.
