Las Vegas 2014. Yay or nay?

edited January 2014 in Poker Chat
Hi all.

Im having a ponder over what holiday im going to take this year and Las Vegas sprang to mind as a possibility.  I've always wanted to go and test live poker in Sin City but I have a couple of other 'more normal' ideas.

Few questions to those who have been to help me make up my mind...

What hotel would you recommend?
How long is the ideal time to go to Vegas for?
What kind of roll would I need to play Poker + survive for say 5 nights?
How much should I budget for the entire holiday?
Is Poker good out there?  (variety of MTTs, field sizes and standard of play)

Probably the most important question though....

Should I go?

Any advice welcome :)

Can I come? I promise to be zero help where poker is concerned, but I feel my party skills are top notch. If I do say so myself.

For info, the Venetian Pallazzo in Vegas is the busiest hotel in the world apparently. 7000 rooms - I saw a 1 hour programme about it on channel 5 last week (you might be able to find it online). The sheer scale of it was fascinating and mind blowing.

    Evening mate,

    should you go? definately

I,ve been to Vegas the last two years an im going back in may. It is an unbelievable place
the hotels, casinos, food, entertainment and obviously the poker. I stayed at caesers palace
each time an the location was pretty good was pretty much bang in the middle of everywhere.
I went with my girlfriend each time and then a couple of friends came with us second time.
The first time was more to do all the tourist type things see grand canyon, cirqu de soleil show,
visit is all the differnet hotels and casinos, bellagio fountains and there are some crazy rides at
the top of the stratosphere. The second was more gambling, drinking, and poker.

As for how long how long to go and how much money you will need will depend on why you're
going. If you're going just for the poker there are tournaments for every type of bankroll im not
a great player and the cheaper tournaments for between $60 and $80 were ideal.(even cashed a
few times first time i played live as well) There are some bigger tournaments in the Wynn, Aria and
bellagio if you got the money nice poker rooms as well. A must see is the poker room in the Rio it is
    huge.

I'd avoid going in July and August, we went in May and the heat is crazy. We could only go at half-term
so only went for a week but again depending on reasons for trip i'd love 2 weeks out there.

I think we had roughly $4000 for everything but did manage to win a bit of money out there the
others on the site who go solely for poker probably take some big sums.

Its pretty difficult to mention everything but got any other questions post them up.

    Do it!

I've been a couple of times and booked upto go twice this year in March and Sept!

Be careful though. I've heard they have one of the busiest Crime Scene Investigation departments in the whole of the USA.

What hotel would you recommend?  Depends on your budget but you have so many options.  Quad/TI/Harrahs are the cheaper options and all are great locations but not the best casinos.  Mirage/Caesars are decent mid range and personally Mirage is my favourite. Aria/Wynn too but more expensive. Off strip you have Palms which is nice but tricky location.

How long is the ideal time to go to Vegas for?  I'd say cos of the flight time then you need to go for at least a week to make it worth while.

What kind of roll would I need to play Poker + survive for say 5 nights? Depends when you go.  If you go during WSOP, then you can potentially flick in a grand a day in small buy in tournies.  Outside of WSOP then try and go during a Venetian Deepstack series.  Aria has a daily $125.  Min cash game is generally $1/$2.

How much should I budget for the entire holiday? Depends on your circumstances.  No point going half way around the world and 'bowling' it up however it is perfectly possible with some planning and research to make a Vegas trip being a fairly cheap one.

Is Poker good out there?  (variety of MTTs, field sizes and standard of play) Yes.  Find a game 24/7.  Even if cash isn't your thing a few casinos run some small buy in turbo tournies round the clock.  Standard differs but generally if you can win online then you'll clean up out there.

    Definetly go!
Been twice, stayed at new york new york and venetian. Both had their pros no minuses!
Played the venetian $150 deepstack which was running twice daily through weekdays and well structured which had 80 runners at 2 in the afternoon. There were loads of other cardrooms with poker mtt all through the day. Just ask your consierge and she can access all the different card rooms and buyin levels!
If its your first time then stay on the strip . There aint many bad hotels and thwy all provide something different.
First time i went i went with mates for the boxing and spent just over a grand in the week. Didnt do much sightseeing but spent quite a bit on drink.
Definetly recomend cirque de soleil O at the bellagio.
If you type into google average vegas temp. That will give you a guide as how hot it can get and how much heat you can stick. I went both times in april and it was hot! But not over the top!
As for when is the best time to go then all year round is good for poker but obviously times like spring break or other major american holidays then you would get more recreational players!

In Response to Re: Las Vegas 2014. Yay or nay? : Thanks Gary, fantastic post. Sounds amazing. Just out of interest, what time did the tourne you played roughly start and end ? To the OP.  GO GO GO .

Thanks, it is amazing, everybody should go if they get the chance.

IIRC correctly there were two $150 Freezeouts each day. We played in the early one (midday), there was another at about 7-00pm. Total running time was about 8 hours each I think.

First time you play there you have to sign-up, a bit like joining a casino in the UK, so arrive early and take your passport.

Further to my original post you should check out @pokerlasvegas on Twitter, basically just updates every half hour with up coming tournaments, great account. Like I say in my original post please don't go to Vegas and just play poker, there is much much more to Vegas than poker!

No trip to Vegas is complete unless you visit Hoover Dam. Concrete Heaven.

Well it is better than nothing, but to be honest, no, I think it is a bit tight.

Remember your first day there, (usually arriving early afternoon) your head is a bit all over the place, as, in effect, you have a 36 hour day. Then you pretty much lose your last day there, so it does not leave much time to see & do so many things.

The main cost is the flight. Assume it costs £700 return, that is £100 per day, £140 per day if you knock off a day at each end for travelling. If you could manage 10 days, those numbers become £70 per day, or £90 (approx) per day net of travel.

The Hotel Rooms in Vegas are, relatively, very cheap. OK, a Suite at some of them comes a bit pricey. But you can stay at a reasonable place for $30 or $40 per night.

So if you can manage a few extra days at $40, you really ought to, as it effectively reduces the flight cost.

True.  I would prefer to go for longer  but struggling to see if I can get 10/11 days which doesnt include two weekends.

Weekend hotel prices are 3 or 4 times that of midweek... but even more worringly flights are A LOT more (like 3x price) to coincide with travellers leaving before or just after a weekend.  Will have to work this one out to see if I can either suck it up and pay the hotel a bit more or find some flights which work around this leap in price.

I want to go to Vegas around May/June too. Just depends on how everyting goes until then (baby and house move are imminent)

I was planning on 2 weeks
    Flights £800
    Hotel £400
    Living expenses £800
    poker BR £4000

I have never been before, but that should give a $500 daily BR roughly and around $80 a day for food/drink etc. I would plan mostly to enter tourneys between $100 and $300, with a bit of cash in between. Possibly a WSOP event if I do well enough.

    does that sound sensible?

I would imagine the minimum poker BR you could get away with would be £2k ($3k) for 2 weeks.

If anyone is interested in meeting up while there, or staying in the same hotel etc, let me know. I'm sure it would be more fun with a drinking buddy.

I flew into Vegas from Miami as we'd had 4 days in Miami before Vegas and flew straight over the Hoover Dam, very impressive! Like most flights into Vegas it was an absolute horror with all the hot air coming up off the desert mind!

    Hi gazza,

    Not true in either case.

Rooms are a bit more pricey at weekends, but nothing like you suggest. Ditto flights.

Im only going by the numbers ive checked on 3/4 hotel websites and 3/4 separate airlines too.

Price jump from £650 to £2100 on some flights only a day or two apart.

Ive not scoured the entirety of the internet yet so im sure there are exceptions but I can only go by what I have seen so far.

    Simple answer..yay!

I will post something more informative when I have more time but a £2k roll would be much more than enough out there for 7-10 days.

    Yo

I second Bromley04's motion that you definitely go.

We are going there again in the summer, gatecrashing Tikay's little hole in the Rio Media Room and generally living on pizza and sugar-loaded air-con for a week (don't anticipate sleep ... it's ovverated in any event).

Vegas is, largely, what you make of it in terms of cost.   You can live (and spend) like a King, or you can have a modest (and equally cracking) week.  What most people don't realise about Vegas is that there is SO MUCH TO DO.  And a good deal of it is free.

There are plenty of tournaments that are low bankrolls and you also get free beers (less a tip for the waitress) whilst you are playing, so that will always save you the $8 a beer bar prices!

Oh man, I am getting giddy just writing this ... *starts counting down on the calendar*
