Rake

edited February 2014 in Poker Chat
Can someone point me to a link on rake and how much sky take at different levels please? I've Searched the site but can't find anything on it.

Salazar

Edit - Not to worry I've found it. For those who are interested it's here

Interesting that small stakes players are paying 7.5% upto £1.40 and the tables over 5p 10p are paying 5% upto £1.80

Thanks for the reply, I must have posted my edit at the same time.
What got me thinking about rake was a big split pot i was involved in earliar tonight. Another player and I had the straight, we both went all in and the pot was split minus the rake. We actually both lost money.

    seems wrong in that situation

It does feel wrong in that situation but I suppose if you think of it in a bricks n mortar casino the dealer has dealt the hand and calculated the pot, the house has offered the game for you to play the hand so you cant say if I loose nobody at the casino should be paid for the work they have done and online your paying for the software, programmers and tikey lol!

I don't have a problem with rake in principle, sky are offering a service and as such need to be rewarded for that service. I just think in the very rare situation when the money goes in and the players have the same hand then they shouldn't end up losing money.

Players at the micro stakes are getting hammered in rake,  7.5% rake on a split pot seems like highway robbery to me. I put £5 in the middle, so does my opponent, sky take £1.40 out and we each get £4.30 back with the nut hand.  :(

Don't forget the 20% rake on micro stakes dyms.

Those 5ps clearly mean a lot to sky.

Great way to keep new depositors interested, give them a cheap game to play that they have no chance of winning at. That'll sure keep them interested.  :(

Yep, it seems crazy. Sky go on about grass roots and wanting players to come in to the game but 20% rake on 60p double your money SNGs. Surely sky aren't that desperate for 5 pence. Invest 60p and if you win get 40p profit? lose the game and lose 60p?

The noobs coming into poker that play these micro stake SNGs are the ones that feed the system and without people coming in then there is no online poker

5% rake on cash pots across the board and 10% rake on SNGs and MTTs buy-ins across the board

    Rake Rant over
  • edited February 2014
Somebody posted a rant thread on rake which I posted a reply to but I'm guessing due to the nature of the post it was deleted as I can't find it now. Anyway, rake at the micros is ridiculous on pretty much most sites AFAIK. To compensate this somewhat sky do offer freerolls which are great for players with not much money in their account to play.

Can sky live without the extra 5p? Absolutely. But they charge what they do for rake for specific reasons. If they charged the same % of rake at 2p/4p as they do at higher levels, their profit at 2p/4p would be too small to be worth running the games. It's still possible though to win at 2p/4p though because the standard on the whole is really bad, so that's a plus side if you are a reg at 2p/4p. If the rake was lower you might get some people that play higher moving down to an "easier" game and thus the games become even harder for you to win at.

The 20% rake on a 60p dym though is a bit ridiculous though. Don't know what the standard is like in these DYM's but it would have to be completely terrible for anyone to make a profit at these stakes.

I'd make the 30p dyms (25+5) rake free.

I'd also have rake free hours on all micro cash/sng tables maybe 2 or 3 nights a week.

The problem is most people at these levels wont understand rake and how important it is.

So to sell the rake-free thing as a USP sky wud have to first educate players about what rake is. Which will probably lose them (and online poker) more custom than the rake free promo will gain them long term. So it's catch 22.

Would be nice if it was 10% tops either way. Give them half a chance of turning a profit. Which would be around 3 pence per game if they do very well in the games.
