High V spots deepstacked in Sky fields?

edited February 2014 in Tournament Strategy

Coming from a sng/cash background where all +ev spots should be taken I'm always unsure when faced with swingy spots in mtts.

I feel I still have a fairly big edge over most fields but how much can I factor this in when declining spots I see as marginally +ev?

Everytime I post hands in here, you can guarantee 3/4 people will say wait for a better spot. But we have to get it in at some point!!!

Couple of examples from the last few days...

1)

This is 2nd hand of the tournament.

No reads but he's just open limped the button so can make the general assumptions about what type of player he might be.
There are probably enough 7x and draw hands to call profitably here, right?

Even if there are, should I be taking this spot, this early, against a guy I've never seen before?

2)

This is a BH. Both villains have been very loose, throwing chips around, and playing way too many hands.

Again I can probably call profitably here if I were to stove their rangers, but it's a high variance spot whilst 42xbb deep @ 50/100 on what is a soft table.

"Wait for a better spot" again?

Better spots don't always come....

Hand 1 - Fold imo. A lot of flush draws are gonna be a favoutite against us on this board with overs + SD's etc. Villain may even play any set/2 pair this way as well (Seen stranger things in MTT's)

Hand 2 - Call, watch A10 get there, type GG in chat then curse MTT variance. Rinse and Repeat :)

Hand 1) Depends on the tourney...BH? BI? If its a small BI BH or freezeout im calling all day on sky. More often than not he has something like 107-a7 or even q5-a5 here. Sometimes he will have 6x too. These are spots where im always calling, if he has me beat BH and move on, on this site over time your going to be winning more often than not in small tournies on here.

If this was a bigger tourney, 22BH or ME this im probably folding to find a better spot. I like to take risk early on especially in BHs as im comfortable playing a big stack early and pushing it higher by being aggressive.

Hand 2) Its a call, the first shove is far more concerning than the call for me. For some reason players tend to raise 5x pre or more with AA, KK, monsters then min everything else so I would be a little worried but its a call.

For me it all depends on your style of play as to what spots you take. As an relatively aggro player I love getting a big stack and creating +ve spots for myself from nothing and building my stack without cards. For a tighter player like yourself I think your better off folding in marginal spots and waiting until blinds are worth more and use your tighter image to exploit other players.

A is a clear fold for me. Villain is most likely passive (given the limping pre-flop) and passive villains are check/calling 7x hands and only shoving a hand they feel is v strong here.

B is closer i probably call tho
