Live poker.

edited March 2014 in Poker Chat
I am going to try my luck at some live poker at DTD. What tournaments on a Friday or Saturday night can anybody recommend for about £50 buyin?? Also, how long do these tournaments normally last?

As a live virgin there may be a few things I'm unsure of. Are most players a friendly bunch who will give advice or would I just have to figure things out for myself?? I think get the basics such as not acting out of turn and announcing raise X etc...........having said that, if there is 500 in the middle and I say raise to 1500, does that mean I put in another 1500 or put in 1000 to make it 1500 (if you know what I mean).

Sorry for waffling on, all advice appreciated!

If someone has bet 500, and you say raise to 1500, then I think that's you putting another 1k in the middle to round up to 1500. If you said raise 1500, then that would take it to 2k total.

I don't play live much myself, but am playing a sat for the GUKPT Leeds leg on Wednesday night, first live outing in a long time, so I need to heed my own advice- Just try to pay attention (as silly as it sounds but its easy for your mind to wander without even realising), act in turn, don't splash or try and touch the pot. And look to protect your cards at all times.

Most people are friendly, and should help if they see you're a live novice.

    Good luck sir!

PS- not sure on their schedules, but I know they have recently introduced a £15 MTT with a 5k gtd. Hunt the value in that. And keep your eyes off the lovely service girls ;)

    I personally love playing live,

im not sure about DTD tho as im in glasgow,

    Key things,

    1. dont play out of turn. (mistakes are made though wouldn't worry too much)

    2. say what you are doing before you touch your chips. i.e  "raise" "re-raise" CALL"
if you play around with your chips they might say you are string betting.

    3. ENJOY YOURSELF! im sure you play more than one table online, the blinds are probally going too be around
20-25 minutes, compared too online its very slow, you will see no where near the same amount of hands or bad beats because of this.

    4. if you say raise 2.000 then u must put 2.000 in.  if you say up too 2 thousand then u put in what is required too reach that number.

    5. play your game, u are a solid online player, u know that stats and figures, pick your spots and try and get some reads on the players, easier live than online.

    6. WIN!

    GOOD LUCK.

When it's your turn announce your intention, if it's a raise say the amount you are going to put in eg if you want to bet 1500 then say "raise 1500" and then put your chips over the line. It's important that you say Raise, all to often I see people put one large denomination chip in without saying anything and that is considered a call. Enjoy yourself, probably best no to get too drunk as you could start missing the action. Make sure you stack your chips properly with big ones at the front so people can see. Good luck.

Cheers Chris. The XXL25 looks like a good place to start. Has anybody on here played it before? Is it a good mtt? How soft is the field?

Sanitising hand gel? lol I'm guessing this is because the chips have been in many people's hands??

Right gonna get my backside down there and see how it goes! BTW, I take it I can become a member just by taking photo ID with me on the night?

DTD is a great place to play poker.

I've played the £25 a fair few times and the standard is fairly mixed. They run a bigger buy in tourney alongside the £25 and the stronger players generally will play in that.

With regards to raising. I tend to say the total amount I want to put in. Eg "£1500' total". This removes any doubt. Also be wary of just putting in a single chip when intending to raise. Eg someone bets 300. If you put in a single 1000 chip this would be classed as a call.

Don't worry too much or be nervous. The dealers are excellent and will help you wherever they can.

I would join the club online before you go. You will still need to take us on the night but it will be a bit easier.

I'm hoping to go over either this Friday or next Friday. Let me know if you want to meet up.

Good luck. Live poker is great. When I first played live I announced it to the table lol. That got everybody giving me advice as well as etiquette advice from the dealer.

I think people are splitting hairs with the raising business. If you announce raise then say an amount that is the amount of your bet, the pot size is irrelevant (unless you under raise). so if you say raise 1500 you'll put that in the pot no matter the pot size.

Little tip for live reads. Don't take the micky with regards to slowing play down, but try and watch people when they first look at their hole cards. Inexperienced players give a lot away. Also the rule of opposites. If they act weak/not bothered=monster. Quiet/nervous=bluff. That is a very general rule of thumb.

Have fun and remember, don't rush. Live poker is very slow compared to online and pay attention when you are not in the hand, info gather ALLLLLLLLL the time.

yes played it before. standard is probably like a £2.20/ £5.50 tourney on sky. As a general rule, I find live compares to 10x the stake of online... so 5p/10p online is about the same as 50/£1 live, and £10 online tourneys roughly equals £100 live tourneys.

i doubt you will find a better tourney for £30 tbf.

As Jac said - there is always a bigger buy in tourney running at the same time, so you'll get all the better players playing in that.

my tip for live play: quickly get reads on the entire table, starting with the players on your left and right. identify the weaker players at the table (there should be plenty!) - this is where most of your chips will be coming from. Base alot of your decisions on this. For example, you might choose to 3bet AT vs a weaker player just cos you can isolate them and play a pot HU vs them and you know they are unlikely to 4bet, whereas you might choose to fold AT when a good player opens. you might open J7s from mid position when a bad player is on the BB and fold when its a good player.

Thankyou for the advice everyone. I will be going down in a couple of weeks for Saturdays XXL25 (can't do Friday Jac).........Blackpool is a bit far!

Might take the missus, stay in a hotel and make a weekend (dirty) of it or I might just drive down, dunno yet.
