From next Saturday I will be absent to the Sky poker tables for over a fortnight as I'm off on a Carribean cruise.
Firstly, I would like to apologise to all the people who usually win all my money off me. Don't worry, I'll be back. :-)
Secondly, has anybody here every played poker on a cruise ship? If so please let me know what I can expect. Any tips would be great. Our ship is called Destiny (we are going on a Thomson cruise, mainly Brits onboard). I was delighted to read that our ship has a casino that has roulette, blackjack, poker, etc. There's no way I will waste any money gambling, but I'm looking forward to having a game or two on the poker tables while we're at sea. I have only ever played poker online, I've never even visited a bricks and mortar casino, so it will be a totally new experience for me.
Cheers.
Hope this link works so you can see the type of tables they had on a Carnival cruise ship...

After I return home I will post my cruise poker experiences here.
Im not sure who has set this poker cruise up but, on these cruise liners they all advertise a casino on board, it's possible the poker might be machines or dealers on casino Caribbean poker tables.. You might find if you want a live game with 6 -8 players you might have to organise it between yourselves .. glk enjoy the trip
In Response to Re: Has anybody here ever played poker on a cruise ship?: They have a 2 seater one of those in my local where my live games are! It's pretty sweet.
"Blackjack, roulette, poker, slot machines, our casino is like a mini Vegas. Plus, the croupiers run practice sessions and fun casinos so beginners can learn the ropes before playing for real."
I think I'll go along and be the clueless beginner.
;-)
Tikay and Norman Pace were there too!
Two things
(a) it was awesome. The entire passenger roll was made up of poker players. It must have been the first cruise in history where the average age was under 100. Obviously, if Tikay hadn't been there that average would have come down even more.
(b) the first night heading out into Caribbean waters was seriously choppy. As a result, everyone was being sea-sick and yet, still heading to the poker rooms to play! Addicts!
Within 5 minutes of sitting down I watched a player chuck up on the dealer in the middle of a hand. A case of all-out rather than all-in.
Mmm, lovely.
Funny though.
p.s. I was talking to blackjack dealers in the casino & they said they used to work on the Black Prince(another Fred Olsen ship) & they said the last time they were on that 5 people died of old age during the two weeks on board. Quite a match for club 18-30.
Anyone know if theres any in manchester? id love to give them a go!
Are you feeling ok scrumdown, if i am not mistaken, this post is longer than 5 five words!
Caribbean 5 Card Stud is a game that each player plays against the dealer only, ie similar to Blackjack. It's impossible to win cash off your fellow players, and (of course) the odds are always slightly in the dealer's favour. I resisted it for a week, but eventually gave in to temptation and played a few sessions. I was fortunate enough to leave the ship with a modest profit, but to be honest it was down to luck alone, absolutely no skill was involved. 5 Card Stud is a totally brainless game when compared to Hold 'Em or Omaha, there is only one decision to make in each hand; after seeing your cards you either raise once by a fixed amount, or you fold.
It's a shame Hold 'Em wasn't on offer as some of my fellow passengers seemed hell bent on losing as much cash as possible, one guy was playing the 5 Card Stud blind every night at up to £60 per hand (£20 ante + £40 raise, the house maximum). Playing blind offers absolutrely no chance of any extra reward, it just means you lose your money even quicker than you would otherwise.
If anybody else ends up on a similar ship my advice is this; 5 Card Stud is good for a bit of fun, it feels great playing shoulder-to-shoulder with other players using real cards when you're used to online play, but your hard-earned poker skills will be of virtually no use. Much like Roulette and Black-Jack, whether you win or lose will be purely down to Lady Luck. Good luck!
Coming back to 3C is no fun when you've got used to 30C. The Caribbean Islands are beautiful, the people are so friendly. Our ship (The Thomson Destiny) was just what what we wanted; Laid-back, informal and great fun. The age-range was much lower than I expected (particlularly after reading some of the earlier repies in this thread, haha). Not a single zimmer frame, drip-feed or geriatric nurse in sight. I will leave the TK jokes to the rest of you!
