No Satellites, publicity or proper structure info for the £500 PLO SPT event in August

edited June 2014 in Sky Poker Live
As usual PLO is the poor relation of NLHE as far as all of the above goes.

This a £50K Gtd PLO comp so actually one of the biggest live PLO MTT comps anywhere in Europe in 2014.

So where are the satellites for it?  I called the help desk and they said it's something that is "under consideration" and they may have some, but nearer the time.  If you are going to have satellites announce them now and put them in the lobby, even if the dates of them are forward dates such as July dates.

It is on a Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon so most people need to plan time off work and to arrnge travel and accomodation.  Please give people ample time to do this.

Also publicise the PLO event (and the sats) on the SKY Poker channel.  Ironically PLO is the favourite game I believe of one of the main and most popular presenters, Tikay.

There are also no current sats for the £150 NLHE event or the NLHE High Roller.  This is still wrong IMO although a bit more understandable because SKY Poker will want to get as many people first satted into the flagship £1000 ME and in doing so have more certainty that the guarantee is met.

But the PLO comp is a different kettle of fish.  £500 + juice + it being a re-entry comp + if you don't live near Nottingham, travel + accomodation expenses, is a lot of money to most so Satellites should be offered early or at least scheduled for later dates but announced early.

Also by not having Satellites you are devaluing the worth of the tournament to PLO regs such as myself who yes would like to Sat in but equally may well stump up the £500 to £1000 entry fee.  Because if you don't have satellites then there will firstly be less in the field and therefore a smaller prize pool, and secondly there will be less value because most of the field if they have had to pay £500 to £1000 to enter will be PLO regs.

Aside from the lack of sats for the PLO there is also no info yet on the structure.  Players would like to know how many chips they start with and the length of the clock.

If someone from SKY Poker could update the forum on the likelihood and time scale of satellites to the £500 PLO event and the exact tournament structure this would be great thanks and would also, if positive news, increase the interest in the event.

Thank you.

As you know, Sky Poker is running satellites for the main event only, at this time.

DTD Online is running satellites too

All the details are on http://www.dusktilldawnpoker.com/news/the-sky-6-max-ukpc/2424

their system allows you to mix/match satellite wins for various events in the UKPC schedule

Main event satellites run nightly and once you have won a seat the next win can be split into tournament entries of £250 or more with a 120 day expiry

As to structure, the structures for the first UKPC were as follows

    http://www.ukpokerchampionships.com/includes/ukpc-structure.pdf

I would expect the PLO structure in Agust to mirror this, as shown for the february PLO

for the PLO the stack is publicised on the link above for August at 50,000

the tournament is 1 re-entry, over two days

40 minute clock til the final, at 60 minutes

you won't get a better PLO comp than that, structure wise, in the UK

Thank you for the speedy reply and for the tournament structure which I agree is brilliant and will encourage me to play.

The apparent reluctance to have satellites on the Sky Poker web site still puzzles me though and in my opinion makes no business sense whatsoever, so if you could please reconsider this I think it would be welcomed by a lot of players, not just by me.

Even if you have a small number of satellites that are a fairly quick structure such as 5000 chips and a 10 minute clock I still feel that this would be pretty good and attract some interest.

The DTD (transferable tournament £) sats are all well and good but they are in NLHE and NLHE is not my game.  It is like asking people to play a PLO sat to qualify for a NLHE event.

Whilst the guarantee of £50K is excellent as is the re-entry option and the tremendous tournament structure, in my opinion, to make the PLO event brilliant on all fronts it needs some on line sats on your own site (played in the PLO variant, not in NLHE), some also on the DTD site, and some live shallowish stack, quickish clock sats
in the DTD club the night before the event.

If you are looking at a direct comparison of similar highish buy in PLO events held in the UK, then the recent £250 UKIPT PLO held at The Hippodrome Casino London had PLO sats on Pokerstars and live £35 + 1AO sats in the casino the night before the event.  EPT London when they have a £2K PLO usually has a £200 + 1RE or 1AO live sat.

The bottom line is why wouldn't you want to get more players in a live comp? Especially when there is a guarantee of £50K.  You are risking a potential overlay and you are denying a lot of PLO fans the "dream" of winning perhaps £20,000 for a small satellite buy in, a dream which is regularly available in NLHE comps.

As I said, it is pretty standard for PLO MTTs to be the poor cousin of NLHE as far as live MTTs and sats to them go, with the only exceptions being The Grosvenor Victoria Casino who in recent years have had a dedicated Omaha festival with 4 or 5 comps over the course of a week, and to a lesser degree the GUKPT tour who nearly always have a £150 to £250 PLO comp at each venue, albeit with no satellite opportunities either live or on line for it.

The key thing with the upcoming SPT £500 PLO is the sheer size of the buy in, which in effect if one is to play optimal strategy is £1000 because having the re-entry option and the £550 in your pocket to make it means you can adjust your strategy accordingly and perhaps prey on and pressurise opponents who only have the one "bullet" at their disposal.

With the buy in so big (strictly speaking meaning one needs a bank roll of £50,000+ to truly afford to be able to play it), the likelihood is that without affordable sats into it the field will consist of the likes of Devilfish, Sam Trickett, a few die hard PLO cash game player locals and a whole bunch of Finnish and German pros.

So the double edged sword of this kind of line up is not only that it will it be harder to do well in the comp, but also that anyone trying to get backing to play in it will be telling a blatant lie if they use the age old phrase to potential backers of....... "and the field is going to be super soft", because it won't be.

Thank you for looking at my feed back and hopefully some of it will be taken on board and I would like to also say that the SPT overall is a fantastic event and is aiming high with guaranteed prize pools and some great venues.

    Kind regards,

    Hi Cliff,

Just wanted to say your two Posts were really well-balanced, thank you.

You & I are PLO nuts, we love the game, but the fact remains, relatively speaking, it is a very low-interest game.

If - IF - there were opportunity for Sky Poker to run Satellites for anything other than the Main Event, (which seems unlikely, I gather), I really think they should be to the "Mini" event, even though it would not be my main interest. That would satisfy a lot more people, which is the important thing.

"makes no business sense".......well I take your point, but really, that's not quite true. Sky Poker have a requirement to ensure that Main Event gets above the £500,000 Guarantee, & if it misses that, it costs a lot of money. So that has to be the current priority, & I agree with that.

Anyway, I do hope you play it. The February UKPC Omaha made 89 runners, & was the largest value PLO field I can ever recall in the UK. Fingers crossed, the 6-Max version will be even bigger.

I don't yet know if I will play it, as I need to get a pass from the Suits, but if I can, I certainly will.

To you & me, the greatest thing ever in poker is a well-structured PLO Tourney. It's just the most fun ever.

See you in August, I hope.

Thanks Tikay for your excellent reply.

Yes I agree that meeting the £500K gtee for the NLHE ME is the most important thing but I also think that PLO money is from a different group of people's pockets to NLHE money.  I absolutely detest deep stack NLHE, I don't mind NLHE when 30BBs or less and indeed my worst ever poker performance was ironically at DTD when I satted into a £1050 UKIPT NLHE for £50 on Pokerstars but then played like a total donkey and busted in something like 1050th out of 1100 runners in the first or second level!

Most of the time in deep stack NLHE I have not much clue "where I am in a hand", particularly post flop, whereas in PLO I feel like I have a very good idea most of the time where I am in a hand and can often calculate my opponent's holdings to a high degree of accuracy.

Like you I love PLO MTTs and particularly when it is deepstacked and on a long clock.  The SPT structure is much better than EPT events and WSOP events so if you like PLO and have good skills then you just have to play this comp as the structure enormously favours the better and more experienced players and very often the more patient players who realise that a deep stacked PLO comp is very much a marathon and not a sprint.

You very modestly didn't mention that you finished runner up for £7000 in the same SPT event in February http://pokerdb.thehendonmob.com/event.php?a=r&n=166794 which backs up my points above.

I can't guarantee that I'll be there because I work full time, but I would rate my chances of playing as about 80%.  I don't really want to seek partial backing for the £1100 (2 bullet buy in) because I am +EV in PLO comps so it is like giving money away and because I don't like to risk losing money for backers and although I have made money for backers most times I have been backed, it is harder of course to guarantee a good result over a sample of 1 comp so I prefer when getting backing to make it for a series of comps where usually if one is a decent player there is a half decent cash somewhere every 4 or 5 tournaments.

If the EPT London schedule is announced in the next few weeks then I might seek backing for a package of those EPT events, PLO/PLO8/8 Game and combine it with the SPT PLO but ideally having a sat opportunity for the SPT PLO would be better.

I tweeted Rob Yong and Simon Trumper at DTD and they both kindly replied.  Simon stating that if he hears of demand for it then he may hold some live PLO sats in the club the night before, and Rob Yong indicating that there could be some on line specific PLO sats, played as PLO, on the DTD poker site.

So this is all good news and I think if I play I will travel to Nottingham on the Monday afternoon so that I can play the sat if it is available and so that I am properly rested and alert for the comp the next day.

All things being equal I will see you there on August 11th and on the FT on August 12th.  I may even buy you a drink...... as long as you are not seated directly to my left.  If you are seated directly to my right I will buy you two drinks!

    Kind regards,

    Cliff (SageDonkey)

    Hi Cliff,

Bit busy today, but I will reply soonest to this.

I received an update from Rob Yong (owner of DTD) on Twitter today regarding on line sats for the £500 PLO on DTD online:

He said "we start £500 sats every night in 7 days. £50 buy in with £2 and £10 feeders"

So in a few days time we should see these sats available at http://www.dusktilldawnpoker.com/news/the-sky-6-max-ukpc/2424

I've booked a hotel for August 11th to the 13th and will be trying to sat in, failing which I will buy in direct at the venue.

Just realised, that the statement above sounds like I am trying to sat into the hotel room as well!
(come to think of it that is not a bad idea..... let's have some hotel room sats too!!) (just kidding, obv)
