Where is everybody?!

Hi all,

I've not played at Sky for a while, I really liked the site when I first started playing Poker maybe 9 months ago, and it is still my favourite in terms of look and feel, but I think in all honesty I seemed a little outclassed back then. Today I decided to make a fresh deposit and give Sky another go as I have been a winning player at SnG and DYM games the past couple of months.

But what is going on ? Unless I'm going mad there are almost NO players at the micro/low stakes right now (12 midday, thursday) ?? Is this mormal? If so things have definitely taken a turn for the worse here at Sky :(

Hope to see some of you at the tables soon!

    I found during the day a little quieter, but things like the world cup at nights will lower the player base,  plus the weather is good more people out enjoying the 4 minutes of summer we get yearly.  Plus during the week it will be quieter,  .most small stake players will be working 9-5, and the regs well they will be medium too high stakes if they are grinding. 

    This would be my reasoning behind this, 

    Apart from some software issues I find sky the playerbase and forum as good as always,

    Whilst i agree the summer months do have an impact on numbers, year on year numbers seem to be dropping( i am sure SKY will say there not) but many loyal/regs are becoming a tadge dissalusioned.  No Vegas packages,  C4p  changes, No SPTS this year, software gliches, etc etc .  Such a shame as a couple of years ago the site was vibrant, now  it seems to plod  along . YES there are lots of promos, but is this to attract new players or keep the dwindling numbers here ?  i really do hope  numbers pick up but i fear they may not.

    Midday during the week in a hot summer and your surprised its dead?

    Games are still good at night and at the end of summer you'll see a huge spike in traffic numbers.

    I bought in to a £22 DYM last night about 10/11pm completely forgot about it, woke up this morning, logged into my account and at 11am today it still hadnt filled up and I was able to de-reg. Obviously I was happy about that but it does go to show how small sites like Sky Poker struggle in the summer months.

     not sure what happened first though, did the guarentees drop so people left or people left so they dropped the guarentees

    Just for the record, the period of the World Cup is the nut worst period for all European facing Online Poker sites. Combine that with June & July being the quietest months of the year, & numbers are always going to be a challenge.  

    Come August & September, numbers will climb again, peaking between November & April. It was & will always be so.

    It's BOOM time for Sky bet though, so whilst part of the SB&G feels the pain, other parts are experiencing record traffic & volume levels. That's pretty much the beauty of the business.

    Next would be value for money, reliability of site software, range of games and buyin's,  .... if i offered my opinion here i'm pretty sure i'd be getting a call from the moderator PDQ...

    One thing i've never been able to understand is considering all the people who have sky tv why they have never offered people with a sky tv account a free sky poker account with a fiver and some freebe entries.... the potential market to get new customers must be huge but they're just not tapping into it!! 

    In Ireland there's an ad for sky tv every hour but i don't think i've ever seen one for sky poker... and in Ireland a very high percentage of people play cards and gamble... just needs someone with a bit of forward thinking and i imagine the numbers and the potential rewards would improve for all of us.

    I'm loathe to tangle, & I'm not here to make the case one way or the other, but have you considered the practicalities of that statement?

     
    Sky TV have around 10.5 million subscribers.


    (That is not a "trade secret", as it can be obtained in a few clicks via google).

    Sky Poker already have frequent advertising campaigns on Sky TV, but as far as I am aware, they are not allowed to run these in Northern Ireland for legal reasons. (In fact I don't believe 861 is available in NI for the same legal reasons).

    They would not generally advertise at this time of year though, or during the World Cup, for the reasons I mentioned a few days ago.

    My concern here would be that the site would not be able to handle this sudden increase in player numbers. I'm thinking back to when there were freerolls laid on that had 2000 runners and the site was unplayable for many of us.

    I do think player numbers have failed to increase in recent years, obviously the amount of players on site right now are going to be significantly lower at the minute due to the hot weather and of course the World Cup.

    I have been reading through GaryLauds thread where some people have mentioned that the rake in the micros is so high that it is unbeatable. Not sure if this could be a factor in attracting and keeping new players?? Also the amount of mtt's on offer in the £1 region are considerably lower than other sites, could this also be a reason??? You could look at the higher stakes side of things too, more £50+ mtts would surely attract new players as well? The whole mtt schedule needs a total revamp imo.

    I don't think things are as bad as some people are making out, Sky is a great site with many great promotions but I do think more could be done in order for the site to grow.

    As someone who works in the advertising industry in the Republic.
    I can tell you first hand that advertising any sort of gaming is very strickly regulated.
    Advertising gambling of any sort is a legal minefield as to when or what you can advertise especially on tv.
    Its not just as simple to add Sky Poker at the end of the Sky TV adverts as it wouldn't get on the air.
    Too many laws to get around and more in the pipeline.

    i agree about the hot weather being a bit of an impact on the number of players on poker because think about it, if you were a very good poker player the chances are you would be taking holidays to places such as las vegas also their is alot of poker tours happening at this time of year too. if you were a rec player then poker is really just a form of entertainment. the thing about summer time is that you can do lots of other things such as holidays, walks, trips out and barbiecue parties which are much better ways to spend money than sitting infront of a PC.

    the world cup i wouldn't say that has an impact mind because it's just the summer time equivlent to watching the premier league and champions league in winter. the only time i really would see more watching it is if the match was england but they are out now.

    Haven't seen 888 been advertised tbh.
    Paddy Power very rarely advertise on TV unless its in conjunction with a festival (If they are sponsoring a race like lepardstown or cheltenham the same with betfair. Basically it has to tie in with whats on . There are laws but they also self regulate. As gambling is still frowned upon by the majority Sky like most companies do not like to merge two sides of there business as the gaming side could have a negative effect on there main focus ie SKY Tv.

    They should consider giving TV subscribers £10 free credit to join (no different to current, but pushing the credit rather than waiting for the player to come to the site).

    Then update the software so that people can play on the site directly through their Sky TV box, using the remote to make their actions... I can see that being a huge success... could even play alongside watching a programme, press the red button when you aren't in a hand so that the poker screen minimises until it is your turn to act before you switch back to the poker and bet.

    Glad I don't live in Northern Ireland!!!! As for casino's we have the Eglinton in Galway which is 20 miles from here... I've not been in there but I'm told its very good...
