How long would it take....

Let's say a friend or family member asked you to teach them to play online poker, how long would it take before you'd feel your work was done and they could confidently play online? How would you approach it?

Obviously some people are faster learners than others but what do you reckon would be the number of total hours neededl? Assuming they knew nothing before.

Complete newbies?

Well, some people would never get it, just as some people will never be able to drive a motor-car. I'm thinking of people like Orford, obv.

But if they do get it, then I'd say about an hour. Usually, a follow-up session is advisable, to review progress.
 
I've done 1 to 1 mentoring with score of complete newbies, most of whom became winning players almost from the get-go. At that level, it is a very simple game.

You could get them playing very quickly. I don't share Tikay's confidence about how long it would be before they were winners.

I would guess I could get someone used to the rules and the interface in an hour or two. I'd guess making sure they don't jump onto the silly stakes would be a trick. A 50p/£1 cash game sounds cheap, doesn't it? :-)

True, we've heard that before. People who perhaps have never played before or are inexperienced could think exactly that.

Big difference between learning how to play online, and being a winning a player, difference of 12 months+

I've been thinking about this a lot recently, as after telling people I play poker they always seem to be after a quick tip that will instantly make them a winning player.  I honsetly think it'd take years of my tuition to get them to the level I'm at now, and I'm no world beater.  I just tell them the best way is often to learn by doing.
