random dealer

edited January 2010 in Area 51
i watched a programme on tv a proffessor said a computer cannot randomise as it is a human function and that it only randomises what is programmed

would all the hands possible be programmed on the computer then the software then distribute them randomly?
  • edited January 2010
That is what is known as "sophistry".

A computer(program) can randomise, i.e. it can produce a result that it is impossible for anyone to predict - including anyone who programmed the computer or who knows how the computer works.

It's certainly hard to program a computer to generate a truly random number given the sources available to it, but do we really care at that level?! It is random enough!

but it would know what cards everyone has and could deal a winner

MereNovice has hit the nail on the head. Thousands - yes, thousands - of Online Poker Rooms all rely on exactly that. It is "fit-for-purpose", & Certified thusly by the Regulators.

Sometimes it "deals" a split pot and everyone's a winner.
    Those are my favourites.

That is in fact absolutly correct. In live games the bestest hand wins 110% of the time. Also the best player at the taable wins every tournament and Donks don't exist inside casino's. Perfect poker is played by every runner and when you win beautiful half clothed ladies bring your money to you on silver diner platters............ orrrrrr was that my dream.... Hmmmmmmmmm. No thats definatly the way it happens

lol Obviously not something i beleive Phil but people think they can't trust it because it's a computer doing it

If people are going to run with the conspiracy theory that it's fixed then why deposit your money and play?

I don't live near a dog track but i don't go online to bet on them only to complain that the dogs being doped because mine was favourite and didn't win???

** P.S at this point i should say that the OP was asking a question and NOT giving bad beat / i know it's a fix and i have proof type comments. This is just my general feeling on all these types of threads that question the integrety of the site and the people working on it (as per super user accounts etc). Not a pop at the OP

i dont live near a dog track either so i either bet online or down bookies.its  the convenience of online that makes it so appealing, and more affordable...but i think the OP point is theyv heard something that makes them question the integrity of computer based games.how trustworthy is something that has been programmed by a human(there are alot of cheating nasty humans about, afterall)?

when I have a bad run ,which always includes bieng rivered repeatedly, it is tempting to blame the site and say it s fixed. But i can t see that it is in the site s interest to put players on a loosing run , either for a long time , or just occasionaly. If they did most sensible players would withdraw their money and play elsewhere.
Given the game is approx  70% luck and 30% skill the 30% is the factor some may be missing.
If you accept that you ain t gonna win every decent hand you play and you will also hit rivers to beat others with stronger hands pre flop or at the turn you will find bieng beaten easier to take.
remember...pocket aces are only 4/1 to win pre flop and those odds increase if called by 3 or more players.

I enjoy and am reasnably sucsessfull at on line poker for a couple of reasons.
I don t have to travel to casinos any more, saving hotel bills , petrol etc. Also I can smoke as many ciggys as I like in my own home. The 39 yrs experience of poker playing helps too.

Absolutely agree with every word of this post. Brilliant mate. I have also stopped going to casinos for these reasons myself + dosh saved on booze or taxis, food, alsorts. (mainly the smoking though)

But seriously you are a good few quid up before you even start. Even though i play more often on line it doesn't matter because a tenner can be built up to last a few weeks even if your not a very good player like me lol.
