FIRST GOALSCORER PATENT

I always like a first goalscorer bet and have decided this season to pick three players and put them in a first goalscorer patent each week.

I'll pick the same three players each week (barring injuries/suspension) EXCEPT for the six times they play my team (Leicester City) because I can't back a player to score against them!!

When that situation crops up I'll replace the player in question with City's David Nugent because he is a good player and takes our penalties!

It's only going to be a 25p patent with a £1.75 outlay but if it comes up once it will pay between £40/50 and I'm sure one of them will score most weeks to reduce the costs.

I've gone for the following three players

Sturridge (Liverpool) - great last season and will need to take over the mantle now Suarez has gone.

Costa (Chelsea) - about time they had a decent striker. He's virtually the only one they have and he's had a good pre-season already.

Sanchez (Aresenal) - think he's the player they have needed for years. He was in the shadows of other great players in Spain and I think he will help the Gunners to be genuine title contenders.

Well two of them (Costa and Sturridge) scored in the first week, but not the first goal!

So - £1.75 so far...interesting this week as all three selections are in away matches and Nugent is in for Costa at a hefty 16/1. If it's only going to come up once, this week would be a good time for it to happen!

Well Costa scored first...against Leicester so I didn't do it. Nugent should have scored at 0-0 and that 16/1 would have been very nice.

So - £3.50 so far and another week where Nugent is in (for Sanchez) and I'm actually quietly confident.

I wouldn't be counting on Nugent all that often.

He is nowhere near good enough for the premier league and his scoring record in premier league games is embarrassing.  The fact he couldn't even take a simple 1 on 1 chance last week vs Chelsea says it all.

Will probably get the odd goal here and there against relegation fodder but not someone you want to be on week in week out.

I'm a Leicester fan and I agree he's not a good choice to rely on every week, but I don't think he's as bad as you imply. My normal three are Costa/Sanchez/Sturridge but I put Nugent in when City face any of Chelsea/Arsenal/Liverpool because I don't want to bet against my team.

Well it started off well 30 seconds into the first match with Costa but as per last week with Costa, Sanchez scores first and it's his week off because he's playing Leicester. My tip at this point would be Sturridge to score the first goal when Liverpool face Leicester!!

Anyway my £1.75 bet returned £1.38 so still down a total of - £3.87, but I'm confident it will pay off soon.

Well I placed the bet before realising Sturridge was injured so he counted as a non-runner, Sanchez scored a great goal but not the first goal of the game and Costa did score the first goal because own goals don't count for this sort of bet. 

Net result, a return of £2.42 for a profit of £0.64 which means an overall running total of - £3.23.

With Sturridge still injured I've replaced him with Nugent for City's game against Man United. He's not scored yet this season, but he takes our penalties and I think he's due a goal. We shall see....

Well no joy with Sanchez, I can forgive Costa one blank week and David Nugent did score with a penalty but it wasn't the first goal. I can forgive that as it was part of one of the best matches I've seen in 40 years as a Leicester City fan, a 5-3 win over Man United when 3-1 down!!!

So a £1.75 loss which gives me an overall running total of - £4.98

Two non-runners and a blank with Costa...so a weekly loss of £1.75 and total running loss of - £6.73.

Am not placing a bet for the thread this week because there is doubt over the fitness of both Sturridge and Costa and no guarantee Sanchez will start!!
