got in a mess, any advice would be appreciated

edited August 2014 in The Poker Clinic
Please be gentle on me, I am posting this hand because I played it really badly and I realise that (ie no need to tell me LOL)
My pre flop play was weak and I got in a mess here , pretty much convinced myself after turn that he was holding a 10 (or at worst an 8), his call pretty much confirmed that, don't know what I was thinking betting the river ........AND then folding...all in all a horror show

Question is more regarding the flop, is calling the correct play?(didn't want to raise and lose customer) I feel I may have left myself way open to exploitation here, should I just have piled it in on the flop, given he is short and may call with top pair (or even overcards if he thinks I am trying to force him off), even if I would have lost in this case?

Pre is fine and not weak... happy to see a cheap flop where had BTN raised pre I wouldn't have seen a flop at all. On the flop both calling and raising are fine. I prefer calling though w/o reads that villain is stacking off very frequently after he pots flop. Turn is fine. OTR I'm not sure why you're donking though - villain is representing an 8 or T himself and might be bluffing. When we bet river he's just folding his bluffs (unless he's crazy enough to bluff shove over the top) and he probably doesn't have worse that can call (after how he played it) - I guess he could have some BD flush but it's unlikely.

I probably just call it off... unlikely villain is bluffing but we're getting really good odds and thinking about it more at low stakes games he could have probably worse for 'value'

    Thanks a lot for replying.

Glad to hear you don't think I got it totally wrong.

I figured calling the flop was a good move, the turn put doubt in my mind, but you think calling was ok?

I was trying to remember my thought process at the time, and I still can't quite grasp why I donked the river either.....

Honestly not sure what I was trying to achieve, still hopefully I can keep learning, thanks again for taking the time to look at it.

Villain could have a 10 in the hole so why bet the river? Just think it out a bit more, not much else to say really.

You've played it well until the river. Check call 100%
