Should I have raised more preflop? Not bothered about his call on river, thats his choice and I like my allin at that point...

I'd have made it 800/900 PF.  But if he is limp/calling with 96ss then I think the only way he folds PF is if you go AI.

I would shove pre-flop in your position but the way you played it is fine as well imo.

With 12 big blinds left i probably just shove back, calling leaves you badly short stacked where you might go out on a much weaker hand. in the end you played it good got the perfect flop and received a bed beat.

Can't see much wrong myself, the only way he's getting out of the way is if you jam. But I can see why you wanted to see what the flop held. Just one of them things mate.
