Sky News Story - ecigs ban indoors?

edited September 2014 in Poker Chat

Hi

This story on Sky News about ecigarettes - here got us thinking.

Obviously one of the places that ecigs are seen is live poker tournaments.

It may be that peoples views depend on if they smoke and/or use ecigs but it might be interesting to have a poll on this and friendly debate so...

    I said no.

I don't smoke, and never have done, but I don't see the issue with them. As long as a little common sense and courtesy is used and they don't blow the vapor straight into peoples faces.

Being in pubs and casinos is a hell of a lot nicer now than before the smoking ban (Yes I was old enough... just).

ive said no. im an ex smoker, i smoked for 13 years but now stopped 5 at end of this month.  I cant see the harm in allowing them as its not really smoking at all, its only vapour.  The problem is actaully calling them cigs which gives them an instant bad name.  If they called them an inhaler of some sort i bet no one would bat an eyelid.

i have voted no to the ban,i am a smoker i dont see what a the fuss is about once again the goverment is to blame for all the bad press for the ecigg loosing to much revenue...
It has no been proved one way or the other after all its only vapour the smell from them does not linger people would need to catch themselves on by the way i dont even use 1 on a daily basis but when im in a situation were i cant smoke IE casino their are a great help when you have to spend upto 1 or 2 hrs at a poker table....

"it's only vapour" - says who?

Studies found e-cigarettes emissions put into the air known carcinogens, ultrafine particles, and heavy metals

I really dont understand when people say its only vapour. Surely it depends whats in the vapour.
I would not walk into a room full of radioctive vapour even though" its only vapour".

Many of you will know of, or have met, Rob Yong, who owns DTD, who are Sky Poker's partner in the UKPC.

He wrote this last night. For those who don't know Rob, it was a little tongue-in-cheek.

    ".....Initially we banned them.

Then I started smoking them so had to lift the ban.

On a serious note, I think they are fine unless people blowing vapour over other people and directly over the table.

    I think it's a common sense / etiquette thing.

Assuming they don't turn out to be toxic killers in 20 years of course......."

They should be banned until proper studies have been done......also people do tend to blow them in your face stating they are "harmless, legal".i don't care,I don't want strawberry, vanilla steam blowing up my nose..

I don't think they should be banned. They have banned them from indoors at our office and making the people go outside to smoke the e-cig with the other smokers. To me this seems a bit like holding an Alcoholic Annonomous meeting at the pub.

    and certainly not butterscotch!

Diacetyl - a chemical safe to eat, but not to inhale - was discovered inside a VIP butterscotch flavour liquid refill bottle

Having read the report by the WHO then obviously they should be banned indoors.

It is the same argument as with cigarettes. Fifty years ago no-one would have considered banning them indoors & everyone said there was no health risk until many years later, they discovered there was a health risk. Just as virtually no-one advocates the return of cigarettes indoors, the same will probably apply to E-cigs in 20 years time.

Although one casiino chain has a tour sponsored by an E-cig company so I guess they won't be banning them any day soon no matter how damning the latest health report.

I have never been a smoker, and dont know too much about the pros and cons, but common sense says to ban them until we know for a fact they are safe.

When i was in hospital recently, i asked if i could use my e-cig.
The sister said no but the reason wasn't the vapour, it was the ignition of the e-cig as it hadn't been properly safety tested in the vicinity of oxygen supplies.

Anyway i had a crafty go with it in the bathroom.........and set off the smoke alarm !

I smoked for 30 years, stopped two and a half years ago, been smoking the ecigs 2 years, would never smoke a real tab again. Not really bothered about the indoor ban as the only indoor place i smoke them is in the house.

A similar story on Sky News today here

Some interesting quotes, highlighting the possible pros and cons...

"For every million British smokers who give up tobacco products in favour of e-cigarettes, more than 6,000 premature deaths could be prevented annually, experts from University College London (UCL) have said"

"Nevertheless, their figures accounted for the possibility that the devices carry an increased risk of death"

Just a lot of  love for this post made me lol even though it's so true .....I stopped smoking the day I was told by a cardiologist that I had partial blocked coronary arteries about a 18 months ago ,and was advised by said cardiologist that if I was going to stop that ecigs would aid me ....now if it's good enough for him it's good enough for me, I don't even like to be stood next to someone with a cig these days so to be told to go stand next to someone smoking one would be my idea of hell
    Regards

    I don't mind them however

You don't smoke at a poker table so why feel the need to smoke an ecig at a poker table.

I would make the rules for them the same as cigarettes but I'm not losing any sleep over it!

I've seen ecigs being used on the London underground and in restaurants in North London. The problem is, theres no law that says you cant use them in public.

It took a various laws to stop smoking in public transport, at work and recently in pubs etc. Until a proper study is conducted into what is emitted in an ecig, they should be banned like normal cigarettes imo.

Smokers generally down the years haven't been the most considerate group in society.
