Hi everyone,

I just noticed that on BBC1 tonight at 11.45, there is a fiction film called Rounders.  It is a fantastic film revolving around playing high level poker.

I am guessing that most of us older ones will have watched it at least once, but it may be that some of the younger or newer players may not have seen it.

The main character Mike McDermott is played by Matt Damon, the film produced some memorable quotes such as -

Mike McDermott: Listen, here's the thing. If you can't spot the sucker in the first half hour at the table, then you ARE the sucker.

Mike McDermott: In "Confessions of a Winning Poker Player," Jack King said, "Few players recall big pots they have won, strange as it seems, but every player can remember with remarkable accuracy the outstanding tough beats of his career." It seems true to me, cause walking in here, I can hardly remember how I built my bankroll, but I can't stop thinking of how I lost it.

Mike McDermott: Why do you think the same five guys make it to the final table of the World Series of Poker EVERY YEAR? What, are they the luckiest guys in Las Vegas?

Good luck on the tables.

Great film, especially if you are a poker player.

Hard to believe it was made in 1998, 16 years ago!

Explains why the statement in bold is in there, the WSOP main event used to get much less runners in those days.

I have to admit, I wasn't overly impressed with Rounders when I saw it for the first time a few months ago. It's the kind of poker film where they feel the need to explain poker to you, and while that works on a very basic level, there's quite a bit of dialogue and narration that just isn't genuine or 'in the moment' because it's dumbed down for everyone who doesn't follow the game (people who, in all likelihood, won't be that interested in the movie in the first place).

So I sit down it a cash game with $6k at $300/600 and play tight for an hour.

Then... Chan raises, I play back and re-raise. He comes back over the top, but I re-raise again. He folds.

Think Chan has to call with ATC in that spot :)

Probably the worst scene in the film, it's such an unimpressive and unlikely story!!
