Do you remember when.........

edited October 2014 in Poker Chat

...you first signed up to Sky Poker? Some of you have been here forever, others not so long.

In most cases, a "New Player Bonus" of some sort was paid.

Which version do you think is best, & most important of all, WHY?

Free cash to play on any game/table.

MTT tickets are fine, but what if you only want to play cash?
Free chips just for cash tables are fine but what if you only play mtt's or sng's?

As for freerolls, that is one of the main reasons sky isn't my main games, you get either freerolls open to everyone, freerolls open with silly top loaded (top 2 out of 300 players) freerolls.

Other sites have some slected freerolls with decent prizes that give more +EV for low stakes players like myself

Well, let's be honest: 30% rakeback is the best welcome bonus Sky, through RTR, have offered. Awkward...?

On topic, I've got to say most recreational players want to play tournaments. I'm pretty sure that most prefer the tourney tokens to freerolls, though. New players don't want to come in against people "playing silly" as they do in freerolls. I suppose that's what I'd suggest continuing with.

The deposit bonus that needs unlocking through a huge amount of play (from a rec POV) is a non-starter on that basis. It only attracts grinders and you don't really need to do anything to attract grinders.

    No clue
seeing my hands on the tv did it for me.

Been a long time for me, about 6 years, but if I remember rightly I got a free £5 (to use any way I liked) when I signed up...

As BL said, bonuses to be unlocked in tiny increments by putting in a TON of volume are no good because most recs will never see 95% of it.

I think the best way is some kind of free money so people can test out proper games risk-free and get a feel for it. I don't know if there's the facilty to give £10 but make it non-withdrawable (until maybe they've staked a total of £10/20/whatever) so people could play cash or MTTs, but like BL said, most new players and recs wanna play SnGs or MTTs anyway so the current system is probably perfect.

I've been on Sky Poker for quite a number of years now.....................

My sign up bonus was calved from stone using traditionional methods and delivered by hand. I remember it being quite heavy though and as I recall it woke me up when it was dropped through my letter box :)

Thankfully the internet moved on pretty quickly..........I was quite excited when I received my new 56kbps dial up modem - "wow how fast is this" life couldn't get any better surely?

Before I knew it my 56k dial up modem was a thing of the past, as was my sign up token, which had proved significantly more difficult to use. Thankfully electronic transfers & such make these things a whole lot easier to use nowadays, but on the other hand it makes them less significant & less memorable. One minute it's there, the next it's gone.

As the title says "Do you remember when...." well unfortunately with the easy come easy go bonuses of Today i'm afraid it won't be remembered by most if not all in years to come and whilst I do like the "Tournament Token" which can be used in a number of ways.....how about something we can remember too........

I still remember my Sky Poker stressball (Those were the days) mind you, it didn't stop me from getting any grey hairs, but I still remember it never the less.

Anyway, all i'm trying to say is, with the boom in gaming sites & sign up bonuses available to us nowadays, surely it's time for someone to start thinking outside of the box? We need to give players something to remember and a reason to keep coming back & depositing on the site.

Out of the choices though - I voted "Tournament Token"

Why can't you have tokens that can be used on MTT's or cash tables as you wish, can't remember when I joined about 3 years ago I think. I had tokens used them on MTT's if I remember right.

I think when i registered you got tournament tokens. I would think a good idea would be to give new customers a match up bonus up to say £50 and then allow the new player to take an option of tourney tokens(with no rake) or cash play money that they have to play on the tables until they cover the bonus given.Everyone happy?!? no ..just an idea.

    Thanks Any2.

Well "everyone happy" will never happen, that's for sure!

Giving the equivelant of "cash" tokens will (imo) always be problematic, because a minority of individuals try to exploit this by dubious means. In fact with ANY Promo, there are those who try to abuse it, it's just how things are, so, to a degree, that limits what can be offered.

The sample size of the poll makes it almost irrelevant, but no surprise that Tourney Tokens came out best.

I don't think I got a sign up bonus, it was a new site when I joined, I may be wrong though I often am
  • edited October 2014
It's going to vary by the profile of the person signing up. A prospective new user who is already a serious cash player say, will probably be more interested in a raking deal or matched deposit bonus. A complete newb may prefer exclusive tourneys just for newbies to cut their teeth on

Not overly qualified to comment - I am not a "sign up for rewards tart" - I have regged a couple of sites just for big freeroll promotions - but have only ever really played 3.

My first one cant really remember why, it was still earlyish days - preboom. It was mainly I think because it was an offshoot of a casino site and I was advised they were good sites to go for as you come across a lot of drunken gamblers. I think there was some sort of rakeback promotion but I didn't really pay attention.

I then joined another site because it was associated with a poker channel (not this one the "other" one that came before it) and I wanted to join in with the televised tourneys/hand analysis.

When that channel folded I switched to sky for the same reason. Think I got points for freerolls - there was much more choice for freerolls then and none of this rebuy nonsense - and a rakeback bonus which doesn't really apply to a non-grinder like me.

Keep going with the Sky niche which is the tv link up and the community. Opportunities to appear on tv would be good too in this X factor generation and 10 mins of fame seekers.
