Those dam jacks! - How do you play em?

Hi All,

Im a newcomer to skypoker.com although been watching on tv for a while. Problem is I keep getting beat with a pair of jacks. Ive lost with them 4 times this week and also saw Gus Hansen lose $100k with them on sky the other night!

How should I play them?

Any advice would be great........

Cheers

Chris

Aup m8 - just dnt get carried away with having "a pocket pair" of jacks! If ur in the bb n u see a flop with j9 n it comes A, J, 2, - ur gunna fancy a stab at the pot with ur jacks, but u wudnt get carried away....

The trick, in my opinion, is to play jacks well pre flop, which to me is raising, or re raising (3bet) - but look at what ur opponent is telling u, n play accordingly.

Dnt get too blinded by ur hand. - dnt be scared to fold. - Gimmie jacks every hand im a happy man.

I've always treated them like small/medium pocket pair - you can either be aggressive or look to see cheap flop (I prefer the former as you can represent the board) but I'm looking to catch set before feeling 100% confident! I'll always find out where I am if see over cards but willing to lay them down to any aggro - suppose the key thing about playing them effectively is knowing your opponent and their ranges of hands! If opponent moves in pre-flop, you need to think what they'd realistically do that with and if the answer is AA,KK,QQ,AK,AQ then you're racing at best so there's no shame in laying them down and waiting for better spot!

As for Gus, I just think in that situation it's almost impossible to give opponent credit for Kings so felt whatever he raised committed him to the hand so might aswell price any flush draws out - just unlucky as Jacks would be ahead most of the time there!

JJ is one of the hardest hands to play. About 50% of all flops will contain a Q,K or A and these are cards you dont want to see. There is no right way to play them but there are lots of wrong ways. It depends on whether you are playing cash or tourny, whether you are deep or short and the players on your table. I have always likened them to monty pythons King Arthur in the way i think they should be played.CHARGE .......  RUN AWAY. you need to be raising with them but also need to be able to lay them down

Update just played in a dym. Got JJ on the button and limped in 3 way to flop. flop comes JJ7. Slow played it as much as i could and with blinds at 25/50 managed to get the pot up to 1200 chips so it can be done

Quite simply that's the best way to play Jacks - flop the nuts and go from there! :)

Chaps, thanks for all the advice  - i really appreciate it.

Ive definitely started a bit gung-ho and need to realise not everyone is trying to bluff me!

Hopefully see you all on a table soon.

    Cheers,

    Chris
