Laptop shuts down when playing

So recently my chromebook has started shutting down 40/50 minutes into a session of poker. Doesn't seem to happen if I'm doing anything else so wondering if it's a problem with the CPU usage or something going too high after a certain length of time and crashing!!

Mine used to do that and it was due to over heating.  My PC still does it but only when over 15 tables.  I believe sky are looking into the problem.

I think if it's completely shutting down it will be over heating.  I didn't find a cooling pad much use but cleaning (if possible) might be worth a go.

I had same problem the cooling pad and a clean seem to have done the trick. I haven't had a random shutdown since i bought them and i've been playing more tables at the same time as well.

The other possibility is a memory leak which i get sometimes playing on a chrome browser on my win7 lappie. If you are playing via browser try using Firefox or similar and see if the same thing happens.

Speaking of which. Anyone noticed if the download client's memory leak has been resolved? It's a while since I tested it.

Although a memory leak is unlikely to cause a laptop to turn off - that's more likely a safety device kicking in (overheat for example). Sometimes there are safety settings in the BIOS configuration which can be tweaked to control the behaviour in these situations.

Thanks all. I've ordered that cooling pad but just realised it says it's for laptops and mac's yet I have a chromebook - I do have a USB port though which it says is all you need so I'm guessing it will be OK?

Because I have a chromebook I can only play on Chrome browser so can't try a different one! I do usually have my laptop rest on a book or something hard but sometimes I'm lazy and don't! Last night when I was playing it shut down twice. After the first shut down I put the laptop and a book and it still shut down - maybe I didn't give it enough time to cool down though? Right now I have it resting on a book and the laptop is as quiet as anything (not been playing poker yet though) but yesterday I could hear the fans going.

If its the pad i put it in the link then yeah it's just a usb connection. 

Hope you get sorted that sudden shut down is very tilting..... always seemed to happen at the worst possible times lol

I know you probably won't find this particularly helpful right now, but my own advice has always been - if you're serious then 1) Use a proper desktop PC, not a lappy and 2) Use a wired network, not wireless (network nowt to do with this particular problem I know).
