Tough opponent to my left

edited January 2015 in The Poker Clinic
I keep getting into situations where the toughest player on the table is to my left and constantly out plays me ridiculously. They call all my raises and nearly always win even if it's just by a slightly better kicker. Whats the best way to play against this kind of player when I'm only in position once every blind rotation?

That's the opposite of what Larson was saying!

Always hard when this happens. I would say play slightly tighter, but before you enter with a raise always try and have a plan. Measure your stack versus theirs and decide wether you are just going with it and prepared to 4 bet shove, four bet fold. Its the just calling that is the problem. Yes, sometimes you are going to get the one time they have it but I think you can win a few chips and more importantly stop them from 3 betting you lightly.

The way I normally deal with this is, fold (get frustrated), fold again (get more frustrated), fold again (get even more frustrated).....reraise with rubbish, spew it off and then enter another game.

Potentially doing the opposite might help. ;-)))

If we are talking cash, you could always move tables when this happens.

i dont think you can really give an answer without knowing what stack sizes and mtt stage you are talking about, if its equal stacks mid way through a tourny then tighten your preflop range, also dont feel like you have to continuation bet when you are out of position on flops you miss, you can always fold if it smacks his range, or check raise boards which you dont think he has hit.. if he checks back then a delayed turn and river bet will take it down 90% of the time unless any draws come in.

    all the best

As already stated, tighten up a tad, find a 4-bet range, and if their floating you a tonne, then find spots to check-raise the turn to start putting the pressure on them. Players tend to make things way too complicated than they should be. But in reality it's just a few minor adjustments that are needed and it's a very fun game of cat & mouse. Embrace it, it'll improve you as a player.
