Live poker bet-sizing

edited January 2015 in The Poker Clinic
So here's something I struggle with and on a quick google search can't seem to find much about it. In online poker I'm very aware of my bet-sizing and try to look at all factors to determine the correct bet-sizing. Stack size releative to your opponent is something that often factors into that equation. For a simplistic example, lets say I raise pre and we see a flop of 5BB's with 28BB's behind. I know that a HP bet followed by a 2/3 bet would leave less than a PSB behind on the river.

In live poker though I often have no idea what my opponents stack size is and being colour blind does nothing to help that!! As such I can only really look at the current pot size and board texture to determine my bet-size.

Can't you ask your opponent how much he is playing? I often do if I can't see due to the way they've stacked them etc.

You can but they are not obliged to answer you. They have to let you look at their stack though i.e. lift their arms out of the way.

Very tough question to answer given the fact you're colour blind Ivan. You could ask at the start of each hand and explain you are colour blind. Although I find bet sizing trickier live due to the chip denominations. Far easier just clicking buttons and typing numbers lol.

As Shauny said they are not obliged to answer you... also I don't mind asking once or twice but when it's again and again I end up feeling a bit silly! But yeah even when I can see their stack sometimes I can't work out what chips they actually are!

You're allowed to ask for a count from the dealer. If you explain situation to dealer it would probably only take him a few seconds to look at chip stack and give you a pretty close ball park figure.

I know your opponents not obliged to answer but I can honestly say I have asked the very question hundreds of times and I've never once had a player completely ignore me.  At the very least they will spread them out a bit making it easier to count (OK this is not very useful if you're colour blind) but more than 9 times out of 10 they will say.  But yeah as said I'm sure if you said to the dealer can you just tell me the values there cos I can't make out the colours, I'm sure they'd help out.
