Bit of advise on late stages (If I ever get there)

edited August 2015 in The Poker Clinic
Been going through a bad run for a while now. Kind of lost confidence, which I think may be a big part of the issue. Long term I've been a winning player for a while, but since this blip the rare time I find myself deep in a tournament I seem to have lost the abilty to get over the line. I used to always fancy my chances of getting the win once I'd made the cash, but now I feel like a cat in the headlights analogy.

I'm part way through the Chris Morrman book and I think as I read through that it will help. But until I find time to do that, what would you all say is your advise for late stage MTTs.

At the moment, I honestly can't say if I'm tigtening up too much, or maybe stealing in the wrong places. All I know is I seem to find myself down to 10 BB's or less far too often lately.

Cheers

I am no pro but do play live at my local casino fairly often so i feel like i can give advice on this subject.

When i get deep in the tornament that is when i start being my most agreesive. If with 20 players remaining you see players keep checking to see who many till they are in the money then they are desperate to cash in the event and pressure should be applied alot as unless they have aces or kings they are not putting there tornament life on the line.

If it is folded round to you then raise as 80% time you will take it down pre flop and that will win you the blinds and ANTES which usally at a live one night event is a good % of chips to add to your stack.

Use the 'all in' bet when bluffing as most people do not want to put there tornament life on the line with a bad decision, people prefer to get all in pre flop late on in tornament and do not want to call off there entire stack after the flop due to a bad decision.

Most important when deep into a live one night casino tornament you need to get lucky !!

OBVIOUSLY THIS IS BASED ON LIVE PLAY.

What kinda sample size are you talking about? If you're playing like 20-30 MTTs a month and you've not won anything for a month or two, that isn't particularly bad/surprising. That was something that always got drummed into me when I was a cash player who just played like 10-20 MTTs a month and was frustrated with a lack of results... MTTs require LOTS of volume.

Often constantly being short in the late stages isn't a flaw in your end game, it's a flaw in the mid stages of the game. It's something a lot of people have where they tighten up way too much, they concentrate too much on preserving their stack and not wanting to bust outside the money that by the time they are ITM they need to get lucky and do some spinning up to get back in the running. Sometimes you just gotta sacrifice some mincashes to give yourself a bigger stack and a much better shot at winning it. MTTs are ALL about finishing top 3, that's where all the money is and that's how you make money.

The above might not even apply to you, maybe it's just a bad patch over 40-50 MTTs, I dunno, but worth throwing out there. You'll know yourself if you're too orientated around not busting and wanting to make the money etc.

    huge plus one

If you read Lamberts diary you will see he goes through a minus £1k downswing.  Whatthis tells you is if the better than average Joe playing who genrally make more correct decisions have a down swing, it will def happen to us mortals.

As he says, all about making the moves when 20-30bb deep in mid stages before we run deeper, hit cash and bled down to 10bb

Run well mate and see you at the tables

ps - if read diary you will then see how that downswing changed to chaching ££££££ :-)

if you're constantly finding yourself short in the latter stages then you probably are playing too tight in the early to middle stages of the tournament. Don't be afraid of risking your tournament life if you think you have a profitable oppurtunity, playing tight is good for laddering but its usually the aggressive players who win tournaments. If you spend a lot of time short it could be worth working on your push and fold game so you know what hands you can profitably shove unexploitably from what positions, this might improve your results.

For what its worth I'm currently experiencing a -£800 downswing and think that despite not playing my best i've played well enough to make money, it could very well just be variance.

Much the same as above, moving time in MTT's is mid to late stages, this is where you can open up and take cheap chips from those who are tightening up to try and make the money.  If you're making the later stages with short stacks a lot of the time, I would suggests it's probably the middle section of the tournaments that you need to work on.

Exactly as Lambert says, the money in MTT's is all on the final table so you're better to take risks in those mid stages to improve your chances of a really deep run.  You can't win a tournament if you're scared of losing it!

                    PATIENCE,POSITION AND STRENGTH OF BET!
Stick to the basics like you did when having a bit of success. The cards will swing your way and they wont in equal proportions. You know you can get to the cash so keep it simple(any decent hand is a shove with 10 bigs etc)Hope your cool runnings subside m8.
