Morning MarcusB.
I don't know the numbers or percentages, but set over set is so rare (in NLH) that we should just discount it from our thinking really - it is extremely rare, & when it occurs, our hand is ungetoffable. It's just bad luck in a way. I say "in a way" because we got lucky to out-flop the 9-9, then unlucky to get out-turned. Even in PLO, where we hit sets for fun, it's quite unusual.
Nothing you could have done, either, the board was fairly dry apart from the flush draw, & I doubt 9-9 man folds to one over.
On a very wet flop, yes, maybe we should play it faster, but J-4-2, nope, the play was fine imo. The rivered Ace would normally be a great card for you, it hits so many ranges, & you'd likely get the lot against most villains, if we assume 9-9 man was not in the hand.
Sometimes players over-think these situations. It was just a bit unlucky, a cooler as the kids say, forget it, keep playing as you are, & all will be well.
Agree with mumsie.
It's worth trying to hit those small sets, even if, once every x thousand times, we get out-setted.
We can SEE possible straights, we can SEE possible flushes, the board needs to have a certain texture. Sets are hidden, & we can bust people with sets far more easily than any other hand.
If someone holds Aces on a 10-7-2 flop, & we have 2-2 in our hand, is Aces man ever folding?
Persevere with them, & if you get the occasional over set, too bad.
Theres nothing wrong about set-mining but when they are low n u hit the flop but the board was dry apart from a flush draw so I think a decent half pot-ish bet wouldn't go amiss to suss out who might have a hand. With only one over card out it would take a serious bet to get the villain off and same goes for anyone with a flush draw.
You just got unlucky on the turn.I don't have the figures but it was rare to have set on set like that so don't let it get to you and keep your game balanced by not thinking about this scenario next time you're in a similar situation.
Run well mate,
Jim
