Cooler?

edited February 2010 in Omaha

Don't worry, it's not a bad beat story.  I'm new to the game and want to know from some experienced omaha players whether this is a cooler or if I should be more cautious about getting my money in with the second nuts?

The first hand shows why it is VERY risky to play medium pairs in Omaha. You have no real draws either so fold this hand pre-flop because it is far more likely to get you into bad spots like this than make you money.

In the second hand, if the board is paired it is VERY likely that your opponent has a full-house so, unless you have a good read on your opponent, proceed with caution. In this case we can see that your opponent was playing "fast and loose" and got lucky but I'd generally pass here as it is quite likely that he might hold JT for a full house.

    Hi VillHelm,

    First Hand.

9-9-3-7? Muck it, pre. It'll get you into trouble even on the odd occasion you hit. Not an Omaha starting hand. It's Hold 'Em equivelant would be J-4 or somesuch. Just fold Pre.

Q-9-2-J . See the Post by MereNovice. Paired Board = RED ALERT.

    Mr Vill,

    Invest half an hour reading
    THIS thread.

There's some useful stuff on there, especially by Talon & MereNovice, but others, too.

Thanks alot for the help.  The 3 hands and no danglers rule is something that should help me.  An annoying thing about last night was not realising that I had the nuts on a couple of occassions and just flatting, but I'm sure I'll get used to it.  I plan to win it all back as soon as Orford takes up the game.

    Hi Willhelm,

One other quick tip, in case you missed it in that "Hints & Tips" Thread.

Enable "Show Hand Descriptions" (it's in" OPTIONS), then your best hand is clearly shown for you. I also use the 4 colour Deck, also available in Options.

Compared to Texas, there is a lot of information to absorb & process in Omaha (in effect, you are playing 6 Texas hands at once), so these little things all help.

Good Luck, & if you have any further questions, just ask. In particular, Talon & MereNovice will always help you with these sort of things.

Good man. I'm doing PTP Omaha tonight, so we may bump into each other at some stage.
