Live poker, Cash game etiquette

edited March 2016 in Poker Chat
I was playing some live poker last night for only the 3rd time, usually i only play tournaments then i go home, but last night i decided to play some cash, i sat down with £100 and after being dealt 2 montster hands had manager to increase that to £180, play continued for an orbit or 2 and it was quite clear despite my early wins that i was the fish at the table.

my question is how long do i "have" to leave it before just walking away? i was uncorfortable 1 because i dont normally play cash games and 2 because i knew that proably 6 of the people i was sat with were better than me, and it was clear they knew it to.

    I usually say.

When fat Les deals next. That's my last orbit.
Or something similar. I then pretend to compete for pots till that deal.is reached.

interesting question of course the answer is get up next hand if u not comfortable and get called some names by other players but u 80 up so who cares. why sit on a -ev table. ul sir but if u hit u stright flush u be on 350+ and playing  Vegas sats :=). I would say chalk it down to exp if playing poker for a living get up and walk away if a rec player take the gamble. but being on a table with 6 better players then yourself is not a gd idea. Hope u crushing dyms sir

I think it is good form to give some notice that you intend to leave when you are in front. One orbit is acceptable. Two orbits or 30 minutes is better.

If a player wins one or two big pots then just walks away, it is generally frowned upon but if that doesn't worry you, that is your choice. To stay one orbit costs only 2bb or less unless you get a monster.

Personally I don't think anyone has any obligation to stay even in these situations, but I know that many other regs consider it extremely scummy and if it happens to me I usually stay a few more orbits. It doesn't really make sense to me, since it is really just because they want a chance to win their money back. But I can't see it changing any time soon so if you want to play regularly without being insulted it's probably worth hanging around for a bit like you did.

Pretty much this. If it one was a one off game against players you won't play again, in a casino that you rarely visit, then just do as you please. If you're uncomfortable just upping and leaving then fake an emergency at home or something. (though a good poker player will see through that bluff easily)

If it's a game that you might find yourself in occasionally, then don't be a jerk and play until its all gone, rinse and repeat every visit.

    Love the game.

Personally I think theres nothing worse than somebody hitting and running although you can usually spot these types as they sit down (min buy in, constantly checking whats happening on the roulette / blackjack tables etc).

If i have had a good run or taken down a monster pot then i will usually play ultra nitty for a few orbits then graciously take my leave of the table, as the regs know i'll be back soon and tbh I couldnt care less what the occassional players may think.

remember its your winning and theres no rule that says you have to give it back.

    Yours in poker.

I just found this a bit interesting.  How do you know you were the fish and that they knew?

If it was something they said, then I would be using that as an excuse along the lines of 'fine if you think I am not good enough to sit with you, I'm off' and stand up and leave.

I have had quite some bad experiences playing live and as soon as people know you are an 'internet player' they look down their nose at you.

If we were still in 1999 then I'd agree with you.
Don't think it's the case now

I hate it when people hit and run me so me personally I never do it and will give them a time or an orbit or 2 live or online just to be nice and don`t want be known to be that guy if play in that game regular. There is no rules saying you got to stay I don`t think but It is nice to be nice imo.

I think its perectly reasonable to stand immediately remove your shirt and do the truffle shuffle whilst on your way to the cage.....just wear a disguise the next time you go.

completely agree with this BUT its good for us
cash online im clueless but in a casino i do ok as live players think they know better and they do judge. once i realised they was thinking i was a soft touch it helped me get lots of bluffs through, 3-4 betting light against them is fun when scare cards arive as they instantly think you hit your miricle card like the online player you are.
i even went to a new casino in a sky poker t-shirt just to get this edge.

origanal poster if you dont feel comfortable get up, if you get any groans then respond, if people are rude why play with them anyway.

ps sky i need a new t-shirt with a larger round bit at the bottom

    Indeed MickyBlue

I had one unsavoury tournament (my first ever in real life) where frankly I was terrified and barely played a hand, something noticed by the two loud mouths at the table.  I slowly built my stack and just after the end of rebuy period, they again pointed out I was barely playing a hand.

I look down and have AA so I say 'ok I am all in' at which point everyone at the table called (I was small stacked by now because I hadn't rebought but had more than starting stack and everyone else had been rebuying like crazy, it was a mental table).

I actually flopped trips and rivered a flush, but it gave T4o a straight flush and I was knocked out.  The loudest mouthed guy said something like 'these internet players don't have a clue, that's why  I always call them with low cards, cause I know they have high ones.'

Sadly he refused to play me at a cash game, he msut have lost plenty at poker.

As pointed out above, I guess times have changed a lot these days.

Presumably if this ^^^ is the approach taken (which is fair if you are effectively playing with scared money because you feel you're the mark at the table) then the others at the table / casino would potentially prefer if you did just hit and run?

Way better to make space for a fresh mark to join the table and have a chance for spins than sit with a disinterested nit that is folding every hand to protect their winnings for a few orbits as a token gesture...
