When it stops having any excitment

edited March 2016 in Poker Chat

Been playing for over 3 years, to begin with, when I won a hand I got that YES feeling
and as I got a little better and moved up stakes, that Yes feeling got a little stronger.
I was not sure where I got my best results, I tried cash, tourney and SnGs.
It soon became clear that Cash tables gave me the best chance of winning   Tournies, Im not very good at, and never really
got any better no matter how many times I played,
SnGs are dependent on other players, some stop you cashing by their bad play.
So I stick mainly to cash. There is a freeroll OMAHA at 17.30 that is fun, and one of the few things left on sky poker that is fun.
Now the feeling of dissappointment when losinng, is stronnger than the excitment of winning.
I have cash in my account, and I am keepinng it there, so this is not a goodbye note.
Its just a time to reflect on whether I should continue with poker or find some other on-line persuit.
As I am pretty much housebound, there are very few things on-line that can stretch the brain and give enjoyment.
So do I continue and hope it gets better, or stop, knowing how bad I will feel if I lose all my B/R.?

If you're not enjoying it, take a break. I have just started playing after about a year off. I did play some tournaments over the course of the year, but like yourself I wasn't enjoying playing poker at all really. I've played more frequently the last month or so and I am really enjoying my poker again. If you fancied a mental challenge why not try improving your tournament play? There is a massive feel good factor to winning a tournament. Not so much to do with the money, but just the fact you are the last person standing. The DTD games on a Monday (cheeky plug) are great fun, only a fiver for all 3 tournaments. Maybe join a team and get some online comrades too?
Hope you get your mojo back mate

If your worried about losing BR then stop playing for money. Poker is not easy at the best of times. To try and play well when your worried about money will make it almost impossible.

Play only with money you can afford to lose. Plenty of free rolls all over the place and the internet is a godsend for everyone who wants to meet new people and make friends around the world.

I ran into this problem last year. I was very happy about the 2nd place high roller and began moving up the stakes. 6 months later my bank roll collasped and I consistantly go upset. Things only got worse when I began chasing.

I took a few months away and withdrew the few thousand pound I still hand leaving sky BR with 0. Now I've restarted my BR again and attempt to build it back to what it was prior to that HR.

high stakes poker will not provide as much fun as micro stakes do. Players are tighter, use aggression in a better way and will ajust to how you play. You'll probably feel like a dominant player in micro stakes and will do actions in confidence. On higher stakes you'll feel more like an underdog at times, bets might be done as a more cautious approach and you'll feel more worried about hero calls.

If it's the game itself that's boring take a break away from holdem itself and set up an account onto global poker site  because those will always have  omaha, hi lo, 7 card stud even 5 card draw.

    Thanks for these replies.
I should point out that money is NOT a concern, sorry if a comment may have made it look that way
my point here was that If i win there is no real buzz, but if I lose there is real sense of loss, whether by bad play, bad luck or bad beats, I do have a small B/R, but as i only play 5p 10p My £217 would cover me for a while.
I can see the sense of having a break for a week or two or even longer, but then the boredom sets in.

Your not enjoying it even with your Sky hoodie on  ?

    try candycrush
after 1 hour that will bore you silly and poker will be alright again!(just for you tikay!!)

try annette obestrad (spelling) game where she covered her holecards in a low stakes game just for fun and see if you can turn a profit, that really helps keep you concentrated.

defo have a week off maybe only playing the freeroll earnt via promo.

u mentioned you house bound does that mean you cannot get to local casino? as this helped me fall back in love with the game in simular situation.

    all the best

head across to roulette you won't need skill for that and all wins will be great.  "finally, my 00 has hit"

    Stop.  Just stop.

And if you feel you miss it, you will come back when you know the time is right.
And if you don't come back, well, you will also know that you aren't missing anything.

    That would be my advice.

Have you got an Xbox/PS you could play instead?
Although to be honest some of the games on there are far more tilting than poker! (Doing Modern Warfare II on Vet mode nearly killed me - poker has never done that)

I believe that there is a fine line between feeling excitment/disappointment dependent on the run out of cards whilst factoring in the fun element. Meaning, that we should probably be feeling indifferent either way, neither up or down. But then we have to ask the question of what that does to the fun element of the game? How can we enjoy it if our emotions don't fluctuate?

There are many good books about the mindset, controlling your emotions etc. But once you learn to do it, you need to seek other ways of enjoying it, but sometimes that could be just reading the book, learning the game, discussing the game with others, hitting the forums and then there is the highs and lows of sessions rather than per hand.

All I can advise is that you pick a game and either beat it, or learn to beat it. I think most of my enjoyment these days, comes from learning, studying concepts, and I also like the aspects of adjusting on a game to game basis and analysing my own and other villains game. There is an aburd amount of learning materials availble today, this is why the games are harder than before. If your fun comes from making profit, then there is no other fix for that other than to improve your game on a regular basis.

Good luck and it would be nice to see you stick at it and strive to get the max enjoyment possible with out it depending on the run out of cards.

I am afraid grinding cash does get boring once the novelty of making money goes so does a lot of the fun. I switched to playing more tournaments and S&G's. These are far more frustrating than cash but that is part of the fun of them. After a while I found playing cash was getting to be more enjoyable again, as there is more than one way of taking a break.

    Hi Blud,

If you enjoy the omaha freerolls, you might want to try the Omaha hi Lo tables.  I got pretty fed up with holdem, as Sir gary says he did with the cash games.  It wasn't that I was losing, on the contrary, but I tried a few PLO8 DYMs, found it a much better, more exciting game, and gradually stopped playing NLH altogether, bar the odd game here and there.

I can guarentee that if you want to stretch your brain, then PLO8 will deffo do that.

I agree with you that the PLO freeroll is fun, but it could be doing with having 5 min blinds, to allow a bit of play.  A PLO8 freeroll would also be on my wish list.

Anyway mate, I hope you find some excitement at the tables soon.

    Blureid11, hi,

Pretty much empathise with everything you said here, we appaer to be treading the exact same path, although luckily for me I'm not housebound. One thing though that I do when its time for a break is move across to On-line Chess, there are some fantastic global chess comunities out there, and I would highly recommend chess as a great alternative to poker as a form of brain food! Then when I get bored with chess I go back to the poker.
Strange thing is though, everytime I come back I feel I'm a better player, and my bankroll agrees with me! I must be subconciously assimilating all the information of my time playing. Conversly though, my chess sucks when I go back to that ;o) but I do soon catch up again.
