on the tax front the rio sort it for you . golden nugget takes it off you and it takes about 8 months and a bit of form filling to get it returned to you not sure about the rest,
once you have got it sorted ,you get your tax number and that stops any of the casinos taking it off future wins.
only applys to winnings over $5k

Really excellent article for anyone who has not been out to Vegas!

I shouldn't say it as I will jinx it but I have never had to deal with long waits at immigration. Having said that I have never flown direct and usually pass through immigration without much delay in the first city I land in.

Well, this can be sorted by some angry sky regs who don't yet have a Vegas package reporting you for internal drug smuggling!

Golden Nugget do not take it off you if you have an ITIN. As it happens, most MTT's @ GN end up in "business", & if we are UK based & have a ITIN, it favours us greatly in deal-making, as the USA Residents are disadvantaged, in that they have to pay tax. So, 4 handed, with 1 UK player & 3 USA players, we can generally cut a very favourable deal indeed.

Rio, at one time, directed you to a "Tax Consultant" who had a little booth in the Amazon Cardroom, & who charged 10% for their services, which consisted of filling out a single form. Fortunately, they no longer do that, & are very helpful these days, as are most Vegas Cardrooms.

Don't worry Matt the forum updates will be excellent once again this year. To be fair I don't think you won a hand in Vegas last year did you? So nothing new this year.

    Don't plant the seed lol...

With plenty routes left to get there I'd be surprised if you don't find your way over.

As long as they remember to look out for me via my real name, Mr Matt Bates, then so be it...

Yup, you got me there, 2-0.

I write all these "Vegas for Newbies" things, & then do 2 really dumb things.

Having confidently declared to US Immigration I was carrying £9,800 in my Lappie Bag, just under the undeclared max, I get sent to the "back room", & whilst waiting my turn, I realise I have an extra £500 in my back pocket, which tips me over the limit. That was a very uncomfortable wait, as it's never wise to mess with US Immigration @ McCarron.

Then I somehow lost, or had stolen, my Passport on the flight home, & Gatwick would not allow me through.

I was reminded of that a week or two ago, when I booked this year's Vegas flight, as it suddenly dawned on me I had replaced my passport, so needed a new ESTA.

Easy job though, I just read those 5 wonderful Guides to Las Vegas, & that told me everything. They really are very good, you know.

How did you get on with booking the Players Meal last year? Was it a good restaurant, everyone enjoy it?

what i meant tikay is to get an itin number in the first place you have to cash for over $5k,and go through the hassle of claiming it back once you return to the uk.unless your win comes at the rio, they sort it out for you there.

Well most Vegas cardrooms will sort the ITIN for you.

The tip is, if you win $5k or more anywhere in Vegas & don't have an ITIN, leave the money behind the counter, go sort your ITIN (it's very quick & simple) then go back & collect your untaxed winnings.

    Remind me who that was?

More seriously, I take my Passport with me almost everywhere when in Vegas, as it's needed for ID so often. Don't like to carry it around, for fear of losing it (me, lose a passport?), but it has to be done.

Tikay I have a question that hasn't been covered in the guide so far. You mention getting a taxi from the airport is easy - however, I was watching a youtube video about 10 things that will shock you in vegas (good or bad!) and the price of taxi's was one of them - with it costing at least $40 for a taxi from the airport to the hotels. But I saw someone in the comments mentioned Uber - do you (or anyone) here have any experience with them? They are apparently 3x cheaper and just (if not more) reliable.

Reading reviews on yelp they seem mixed. Some are really great - others have said they're not really any better than cabs (and only barely cheaper if some of them try and take you a weird long route)

To use Uber from McCarron Airport, it's slightly awkward actually, as you have to heft your case up an escalator & then walk across the bridge to the parking garage, then make your way to the Valet section. After a 10 hour flight, plus another 6 hours of queuing, waiting & faffing, I just want to get to my hotel quickly, so have never bothered.

The regular cabs are smack bang outside the Terminal door, so that's my preference.

The cost varies, from $20 to $40. If you don't specify, the cab will take you along the faster, but much longer, Freeway, & it'll cost around $35 + tip.

However, if you tell the driver to go via the Strip, it's sometimes slower, due to traffic, but is half the price - depending, of course, which hotel you are booked into.

The Sky Poker qualifiers are staying at Palazzo again this year, which is at the other (far) end of the Strip, fwiw.

Incidentally, you can almost always casually organise a taxi share. The UK flights arrive, & the passengers are all there for poker, so get in the queue, & you can soon make an introduction, "you OK to share the cab?" sorta thing.

The only minor problem is that T3, the International Terminal, is deathly quiet & very under-used, so usually you need to walk along to the T1 cab rank, which is about 100 yards further along, as there are not often cabs waiting outside T3.

Without realising you probably just pulled one back.

I turned up at Manchester airport last year comfortable with the fact that I had been to Vegas the previous year and had a year left on my ESTA. I went to the check in desk and the lovely lady welcomes me and asks me if I have my ESTA sorted.

I advise that I have only for her to look at me and say no you don't sir. I assure her I do and she has one last check and says no you really don't.

I explained that I went last year and it was a new ESTA for that trip. She then asks if I have a new passport. It was only then that it dawned on me that my ESTA is linked to my old passport which didn't make it through a breakup with the ex girlfriend. Cue 10 frantic minutes on my mobile trying to get a replacement. Thankfully all was good, I was having visions of me turning up to the office in Leeds instead of boarding a flight to Las Vegas.

As for the players dinner I have no idea what you are talking about.

The last couple of times I have arrived in Vegas I have just went to the cab rank and got a shuttle bus. There is a kiosk right at the exit selling the shuttle bus tickets which cost well under $10. There is usually a 10 minute or so wait while they pick up another passenger or 2 and then they deliver you safely to whichever hotel you want.

Yup, also if you search for upcoming poker tournaments in las vegas on google you will see a link to 'poker atlas' which shows every tourney at all the casinos and has a section showing what cash games are usually running at each casino.

    Evening F Ivanovic,
After getting the, what seems like obligatory longer than usual route routine from the airport, we used Uber for the rest of our week in March. Apart from the occasional harder to find pick up points we found them fine. Half the price of the normal cabs too. Would definitely reccommend them from our experiences,
                                                                                                        Regards Ed.

Panicked me for a minute there as my passport is almost 9 years old so thought it might not have the biometric chip. Upon checking it is fine though... (Apart from a few minor scuffs on the front cover)

This happened to a mate of mine on Tuesday this week.  The easy way to check if you have a "Bio" pp..on the front cover there should be a  small "camera" motif.

You don't NEED to no, & I would not recommend that you do. You CAN, if you wish, but I would not advise it, it gets messy with currency translation & so on. As it happens, there is one WSOP Event where you can get extra chips by via their Online Site, but it's too complicated by half.

All you need to do is get a Players Card from Desk at the far end of the Rio Corridor. Then, right next door to that is the Event Registration room, where you actually buy-in.

    To buy in you need.....

    1) Passport

    2) Players Card

    3) Money.
