I was playing the £1.10 £100 deepstacks tournament, and this was my bust out hand. My question is as above. Did I play this poorly, or was I just unlucky?

It's just a case of bad luck

an open raise 5BB might have enambled a wider range of callers pre but on this occassion your all in and lose no matter what whether it preflop or post flop because you've got top set and JJ himself has got the flush draw if not best pair against what he might think is an Asx

i really like the shove tbh your playing a 18BB stack and theres 3BB already in the middle for you to steal, if you raise 2-4 BB your just gving everyone the odds to get involved, and raising 5Bb or more your saying your all in anyway so you may aswell take the iniative and stick them in yourself.

regardless i think its always going in pre here and you were just unlucky.

What makes you think you played it badly? You got the money in as an 80% favourite. I know we can't be results orientated and you might have had the same situation with QQ against KK where you got it in badly. But generally QQ is always strong enough at these stack depths to get it in.

Well, I thought the open shove might have been a bad play. Looks like I was just unlucky, as everyone seems to have mentioned.

Smout, although I don't think your play is necessarily "bad", I don't think it was the best play. I'd be surprised if a smaller raise - say to 2k or something - had a smaller EV than jamming. The two limpers most likely have weak ranges and we want to exploit them by keeping them in the pot. On this occasion someone limped a strong hand so it doesn't really matter, but I think more often than not we'll just get two folds which, ofc, is a fine result, but I'd argue it's not as good as keeping in the weaker hands with not so great equity against our hand.

In short, the smaller raise maximises the chance of an opponent making a mistake.

Agree that we can just iso raise pre and give someone the rope. If this was a BH then I wouldn't mind just shipping it fully expecting to get looked up.

reading has never been a strength of mine. especially hand histories. Agree with the BH ship, I've seen some strange calls in my time to say the least.
