Andy is 100% right. The 16-runner races with 1/4 1234 have a fundamental flaw in the formula for working out the place part and that means that the place part of your each-way bet is +ev (it's in your favour). You may lose a couple of percent to the bookies profit margin on the win but you'll generally get about 55 on the place part...just dividing the odds on the win by four and adding all those percentages up will leave you short of the 400% that bookmakers need to break even in those races. In most races each-way bets are terrible for punters but these ones are a rare chance for punters to have the edge.
Sometimes bookmakers offer an extra place in bigger races...The Hennessey next weekend will probably have 18 runners and Sky Bet are usually really good and offer 5 places. This is just about the biggest edge you can have in a horse race bet and you ought to try and bet three or four horses each-way to have the best chance to win.
