I have tried to send one or two PMs recently, but am unable to access the text area. No problem getting name or entering the headline. Any suggestions?

Well it's not exactly state of the art stuff, but it works OK for me.
Are you on a Laptop, or a Mobile?
Personally, I can't access it via "Tablet" (I-Pad etc) but it's 100% fine on my laptop.
When you select "Send Message", you SHOULD see three things;
Send Message to
Subject
Message
