Which of these are bad luck and which are bad play

edited July 2017 in The Poker Clinic
I have lost over £150 on the cash tables in just 3 days, at first it was a case of bad luck but now I'm questioning my own game. I could go on for ever with hands but here are a number of big ones. What started of as a period of small losses on loose aggressive tables has turned into a massive loss.
Some of the decisions made in these hands such as the AI I did in hand one was extremely poor.

ONe thing that does seen common with my current game is I'm rarely able to get big pots  I can't even make a full stack in coolers because villians are only ever calling me yet big pots are lost all the time.

Why do you go big on possible bad boards  and then check seemingly good flops?
  • edited July 2017
Hand 1 QQ: dont know what we can really expect to be beating when we call the shove on the river.

Hand 2 QQ: I would raise bigger pre and why are we not betting a 10 high runny board and the 6 turn.

Hand 3 JQ: I think I'd raise the flop

Hand 4 AA: why are we not betting the turn?

Hand 5 AK: ok and plays out like this.

Hand 6 10 Q: 7 on turn seems like a pretty decent card to follow through on as does the 7 river.

hands 2 and hand 4 When ever I am out of position the rivsk of a set always comes to my mind, I'm always thinking that they will fold most pairs and I don't very often expect them to have draws.

I can probably conclude that I have been a generally poor player in the last few days, I look back at my hand range and notice atleast £50 of the recent loss is my own fault.

Unfortunately it's the nature of the beast, we all have days where we make bad decisions, i certainly do. I would say that you're one of the better players at that level so just keep at it mate, it'll turn around.

I think in a lot of those you want to be taking a bet / fold line rather than check / call line, particularly at the stake level you are playing.  So many of these players bluff too little so you end up paying off made hands if you opt to check/call.

1st hand - kinda sucks especially being deep.
Think I'd check turn with A and K out there, as what do you either burn money (if they have Ax or Kx) or are turning your hand into a bluff (if they have 88-JJ).

I'd bet on a lower turn card (to maybe get value from 88-JJ and prevent things like AQ/AJ getting a free card to bink an Ace river).

River call is just spew.  Struggle to think of many bluff hands a player would have at these levels.  They aren't going to be turning things like 88-99 into a bluff.

2nd hand - you just have to cbet here and are missing so much value by checking.

In this case you probably get check-raised on flop (and have a tough fold) or turn (and have an easier fold), but there are SO many bad turn cards for your hand (any spade, any A,K for overcards, J,T,9,8,7,6 for straight and 2pr hands).

At the same time it is so easy for your opponent to pay you off with worse (any flush draw, any straight draw, gutshots, top pair etc).

3rd hand - post flop I think this is just a cooler, although against that particular player I would expect to see the straight or a set almost all the time.

Preflop... meh I'm not sure I'd call QJo vs an UTG open, even as a min raise.

4th hand - same as 2nd hand really, you have to bet the turn here for value. Tx hands will still call and because of the board you probably also get called by some other middle pocket pairs, any hand that picked up a flush draw and maybe even some Ax gutshots.

Sure, in this case you'll probably get raised on the turn (and probably should fold multiway) but it's a mistake not to bet turn IMO.

5th hand - may consider shoving pre... but lots of people seem to love the limp/3bet with AA at these levels.  You have to do your stack here, but make sure to take a note on players that do this.

6th hand - agreed as above, if we are going to bluff the flop then we have to follow through and bluff the turn.

You should probably even fold the 10p river then as I can't see any flop hand calling which we beat on the river... but obv a sigh call is fair for the very rare time Q high is good lol.

If villain calls turn then just need to add notes and maybe play draws more passively in future / go for more value with top pair hands or better.

    Thanks for advice.

I can conclude from today that my overall play recently has been awful. Friday was a story of bad luck calling stations and donks everywhere bad beats were all over the place. I got too over reactive about this and begun making awful decisions myself by over valuing my hand creating big pots on dangerous boards, not wanting to give up my hand and consistantly blaming the stuff on bad beats.

Today itself brought a series of bad beats and coolers 469BB was lost in 5 hands where I commited 50BB and 384BB was won in 5 hands where I commited 50BB+. That did't stop me from finishing my day with a BR 24BB bigger. therefore concluding that my overall value betting of recent times has been at fault

This here was my worst one of all yesterday

It sounds nitty but there are 3 combos of straight flushes out there, I think its maybe overly optimistic to think you're getting the lot from the bare Kc when you reraise again on the river, so unless you have notes/history saying they'll spew or massively overvalue, I'd be inclined to flat their £8 repop.

Still pretty unfortunate to run into a straight flush, though how the hand played out (limped pre, checked through on turn), and particularly the river action, they gave you a decent chance to not do the lot.

I don't thinks it's nitty at all, I myself would have called the £8 any good day, What happened here was I got too quick with my decisions, The only danger I saw on the turn was the flush put on thought what so ever into the straight and The only straight flush I did think about on the river was 6c 4c and that was most likely helpedby the fact I could see any 6 makes a straight.
